Sounds like it could be the bridge at Fallujah all over again... or Mogadishu, take your pick.

Video shows dead US pilot being abused in Iraq
By Sam Knight and agencies
A video has surfaced purporting to show the burning body of an American pilot being dragged by Iraqi insurgents away from the wreckage of a helicopter.
The blurry images were posted on the internet today in the name of the "Mujahidin Shura Council", an umbrella group of five extremist organisations, including al-Qaeda in Iraq, that was reportedly formed in January.
The council, which is believed to have been created to sideline Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the most wanted terrorist in Iraq, said the images were proof that its military wing had shot down the helicopter .
Although the authenticity of the video could not be confirmed, it appeared to clearly show the remains of a US Apache helicopter in the background, as the bloodied body of a man, his clothes on fire, is hauled by a group of men across a field. At one point, the camera zooms in on the man's waist and shows the "Hanes" label of his underwear.
No discernible markings are visible either on the helicopter, or on the uniform of the man.
A US AH-64D Apache Longbow helicopter crashed west of Yusifiyah, a small town south west of Baghdad, at around 5:30pm on Saturday, according to American military commanders. The following day, the US military said the aircraft had possibly been shot down and that the men's remains had been recovered.
This afternoon, US military authorities released a statement saying that although the internet images "suggest that terrorists removed part of a body from the crash site, the authenticity of the video cannot be confirmed".
Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Withington, a spokesman for the US forces, added: "We are outraged that anyone would create and publish such a despicable video for public exposure."
The statement confirmed that two pilots in the downed helicopter had died, and said that US troops had recovered "all available remains found on the scene, given the catastrophic nature of the crash".
Although the names of the pilots have not been released, The Albany Times Union, a newspaper in upstate New York, reported that one of the men was Captain Timothy Moshier, a 25-year-old West Point graduate from the town of Bethelehem.
The newspaper said on Monday that Mr Moshier's family had been informed of his death and that he was at the controls when the aircraft came down. Today, the newspaper reported on its website that the family had not heard any more from the US Army since the news of the video's appearance.
"As far as they're concerned the remains have been recovered and will be returned,'' Jay Gallagher, a family friend told the newspaper. "Any speculation about that video just adds to their pain and they're not going to be focusing on that."
Yusifiyah, 12 miles south west of Baghdad, is part of the unsettled and religiously-mixed region south of the capital known as "Triangle of Death". In the past, insurgents in the town have attacked Iraqi-run roadblocks and set roadside bombs for Iraqi and US-run patrols. |

I haven't seen the video in question, nor do I have a link for it. Maybe somebody else will be willing to provide it. I avoid these sorts of things, I still haven't seen any of the beheading videos that were in circulation a couple of years ago. |

I guess I'm suprised that anyone still blinks at this. We've seen enough from the insurgency that we should be expecting this kind of thing I thought. |

That's the point. From them, it's expected.
But we - the civilised west - are working to a higher moral code and not expected to do this. |

As I've suggested before, imagine that some of the 9/11 hijackers parachuted to the safety of Central Park and found themselves surrounded by street gangs who figured out what they just did - what do you think would have happened to them? Bored, angry, unemployed New York youths would have made a citizen's arrest and then just waited for the FBI to arrive, having such a higher moral code? |

Ahh, so that is why you save your outrage exclusively for U.S. wrongdoing: you hold nonWesterners in lower regard.
How noble. |

Could all be moot anyway...
U.S. Military Doubts Burning Pilot Video
By ROBERT H. REID, Associated Press Writer 55 minutes ago
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Gunmen shouting "God is Great!" dragged the burning body of what they said was a U.S. pilot in a horrific video posted Wednesday on the Web by a new al-Qaida-affiliated group that claimed it shot down an Apache helicopter last weekend.
The U.S. military expressed outrage over the release of "such a despicable video for public exposure" but said it had serious doubts that the footage was authentic...

Yes, bomber crews don't tend to fare to well in the hands of civilian populations that have just been bombed.
Which is understandable I suppose.
Not justifiable, mind you. Understandable. |

Didn't US marines regularly mutilate VC soldiers? I know in Canada we like to take part in peace keeping missions, capture black teenagers and torture them to death (making them shout "canada" before the death blow is delivered) and our government likes to sweep it under the rug before election time. |
