Since public schools get the majority of their funding from local taxes, you have wonderful schools in wealthy neighborhoods, and horrible schools in poor neighborhoods.

Unless you have busing and force/bribe students from wealthy neighborhoods to attend schools in the poorer neighborhoods.

I would assume that because the "white boys" are the ones that make the news, everyone believes "white boys" are the only culprates. The truth is, minority violence is so prevelent, it hardly makes the news anymore.

I'd say violence in schools is equal opportunity.

Sure the "opportunity" is there, just like anything else. But the difference is who takes advantage of that opportunity. Thing are different in the states when it comes to race.

What do I think is wrong with the American school system?

Selective history, i.e.:
1. Pilgrims
2. American Revolution
3. George Washington
4. Abraham Lincoln frees the slaves
5. America beats the Soviets to the Moon.
6. 9/11

The Public School System tends to gloss over the bad parts of American history.

Oh yeah, not enough P.E. Have you seen how fat American kids are nowadays?

It is humorous to see people who have never stepped foot inside an American school telling the world what's wrong with American schools.

Ok Spinoza's g/f I'll let you in on the problems of America's educational system. I have no children but when I do they won't be going through the open gateway(much like our borders) we call the public school system.
Problem #1: Too many kids for the schools to handle. We have a massive influx of immigrant children who need special attention in our classrooms. They don't speak the language and their parents don't pay taxes so our resources (manpower, books, creative materials, etc....) are stretched in many cases to the breaking point.

Problem #2: As mentioned in one poster's post the NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND system. Pure crap. I believe in promoting a child to the grade he/she belongs in and not keeping everyone else back for the stupid and/or lazy. Don't let someone graduate who can't read!!!

Problem #3: Teacher's are being paid to push kids through the system and to pass end of course tests. That's essentially the thing that they're being paid to do now. If a certain # of your students pass the end of course test you'll get a raise. The teachers don't care anymore.

Problem #4: Why don't the teachers care? They get paid very little $$$ for the hours they put in. Many get paid between $10.00-$15.00 per hour to deal with screaming kids, loads of work, long hours, and irritating parents.

Problem #5: Many teacher's are indeed afraid of their children. Kids are much more aggressive in schools than they used to be. I blame it on the fact that teachers are regarded as little more than babysitters by most parents and have no right to discipline their students. Teachers don't have the authority that they used to b/c of bleeding heart liberals and parents that whine which leads me to Problem # 6.

Problem #6: Parents don't raise their children to respect their elders any longer. This translates into talking back to their teachers and other older adults as well as agression. Kids face no consequences for their actions any longer and parents are all too quick to point their finger at the teacher if little Johnny doesn't pass his spelling test. "Why aren't you teaching my child?" If little Johnny is too busy throwing spitballs at fellow classmates and playing with himself in his chair, he's not going to pay attentions people!!!
This in a very small nutshell are some of the problems with the US educational system. Too many kids, limited monetary resources, undisciplined children, a culture of finger pointing, and unhappy teachers all lead to crap!!!

Not to be rude, but is the USA not a super power for a reason? FAT? But not LAZY!! Uneducated? Well how did we get where we are?

And I am confused about 1 through 6?? Please explain. I am a product of the American school system, so what is it about these subjects that you THINK that I did not learn in school?

It would defnitely take a bit of imagination atleast. It might be too hard for th e resident idiots to manage that (resident idiots does include some Americans too, not just the others).

Personally, the school system from what I have seen isn't that bad. It's the parents, and lawsuits that are the problem. Teachers have no power at all. Some of this newage "treat them like adults" and "children need facilitators, not instructors" crap is good to an extent, but children know who the boss it now.

I am a product of the American Public School System. I knew nothing of American history (other than some of the little blips I originally posted and what I read on my own) until my Freshman year of University.
I'm not suggesting that we didn't learn these events, I'm suggesting that's all we learned.

The fat kid thing was a joke, but seriously.... on average American kids are getting fatter and fatter. Some have suggested this is due to Physical Education cutbacks.
