What about putting each letter on a piece of paper and spread them on the floor? Have two kids race to find the letter you call out. (Or have them do it at their desks...use smaller pieces of paper, with each kid having all the letters.)

Middle schoolers?

Put them in small groups & give them 5 or 10 minutes to formulate questions (on paper) they might like to ask you. While theyre working on that, circulate & make small talk & give them a hand.

Then invite their questions. They'll be simple & generic & you'll be able to turn the same questions back on random students. Keep it easy & light & smile lots & they'll love you.

bring/buy a soft ball. Then toss the ball to students and ask questions. It could be simple like name, color, age, etc. If this is successful, try having others do it.

That's a good idea. Ease them in gently cos they will probably be a bit in awe of you.

Plus that will help you gauge what they do and don't know.

Another thing I do is write the numbers like 1-20 in words and numbers on to cards. Mix them all up and put them face down on the floor. The students have to match the number in words with the number it represents.

E.g five and 5

I would emphasize using flash cards a lot. Look on this website for game pages. I found one that had english games A-Z. I use it all the time. Korean kids like singing. See if school has some cd's or tapes. I hated teaching 1st 2nd graders!! Hope you have a lot of energy!!! Shocked

Personally I tried the tossing the ball game and that didn't work out so great as kids can get pretty loud and too excited and start going after every ball you throw, eventhough you are throwing the ball to the other side of the room. You might lose control of the class then. Remember these are just out of kindergarten (about a month and a half ago).

I suggest doing some simple TPR with the classroom language - stand up, sit down, push in your chairs, line up, hands up, hands out, clap two times etc. The idea of this is to get students familar with the langauge that you will use in the class, especially when you have to punish them Smile (stand up, push in your chair, hands up) Or when they have to leave the class (stand up, push in your chair, line up).

It's the first day so be strict. I know that it's your first day but whatever you do tomo remember that the kids will have a lasting impression on you from your first class. We all did when we were young and had a new teacher. So lay down the rules and it will save you time later on.

I have four simple rules that the kids know by heart now -

1 - No Korean,
2 - No talking,
3 - No eating,
4 - No writing on the desk.

Make the kids sing this off (Rule 1, no Korean. Rule 2, no talking etc) and don't worry the time will go by quick enough. I'm guessing you will have 40 minutes a class like mine.

PM here on on the other board if you have any questions.

oh it went great, peri... I am teaching from 1-5, and they pay me to do an hour's prep in the morning... heh...

I wouldn't call it full time but I had a great time. Missed Letty a hell of a lot but she, apparently, had a great time, too, at daycare!!
