Korean's population is 48 million, 1% of them are foreigners. Apparently there are offically about 10-12,000 E2s issues if you double that for illegals etc. English teachers total half a percent of the foreigners in Korea. We are tiny little bit of a tiny little bit.

So why is that there are so many self-important english teachers walkign around the place trying to save Korea from Koreans?

We are trying to encourage Korea to join the international community. They need English if they want to travel. If they just want to stay on this plot of land until death, then only knowing Korean is fine. If you're at least a competent English teacher, you are actually pretty valuable.

I wonder if she was talking about English, or the fact that so many of us walk around trying to save Koreans from their horrible manners and such.

I thought she was talking about foreigners who are trying to stop other foreigners who have no manners in this country, but a second look at the original question proved me wrong.

I suspect she didn't literally mean "english teachers walking around" because, realistically, how many of those does one even see in the normal course of their life here, compared to the vastly greater numbers of Koreans or non-teacher foreigners? Surely not enough to get worked up about. Surely, surely not. I suspect that while she wrote "walking around", she actually means "posting here on Dave's", no?

Whichever it may be, perhaps CLG will give us a few examples of these english teachers and their methods of trying to save Korea from Koreans. I think I know the general type she's referring to, but... No, I'll wait until she describes a few of them.

Despite their relatively small numbers, I personally _sense_ that Korea today is positively crawling with English teachers. But that only began when I started reading Dave's ESL Cafe, prior to which I'd go months without talking to a foreigner who I knew for a fact was a teacher and without hearing or reading the term "ESL".

Perhaps that's just the kind of people who come to Korea to teach English? If this place is your sample, I would say it isn't a fair representation of the foreigners in Korea. The internet makes people weird...the lack of accountability.

I also think this place is chock full of socks...I think that's obvious by the attitude/date joined correlation. I think acting odd at Dave's is a hobby for many.

That, or Korea is just that kind of place. It inspires some people.

That's a good point. I find that people tend to act alot differently on internet forums than they do in real life.

I dunno... as much as I myself also hope people aren't quite the *******-*** *********** that they seem to be on the boards, it does seem that a good number of them do interact with others in real life. Then again, maybe it's just a bunch of attempts at bluster to make you sound tougher than you realyl are, like putting a bunch of asterisks in a posting to make it look like you're cursing.

I'm just saying.

I'd say that fear is well placed.

Putting the obvious trolls and socks to one side, I just don't buy this idea -- and one hears it a lot --- that people are "nothing like" their online persona, or that a statistically meaningful "many" posters even have what you could describe as an "online persona" distinct from and noticeably unlike their "real-life persona". A pointlessly small minority of delusional people or people who... I dunno... who are "exploring" "other sides" of their "personality"? Rolling Eyes Sure, I suppose there will always be the rare exceptions that prove the rule. But most, or even a significant number of them? Rubbish.

Again, excluding the socks & trolls, I'd say over 90% of the regular posters here are WYSIWYG. So yes, the ones that cause you to live in mortal fear, they are as bad in real life as they appear here.

Simple answer, they're not.

Long answer, some people have different views and opinions than you do. They are not wrong, and you know next to nothing about them or how thier opinions were formed. Yet your willingness to take the moral high ground and judge others in this way makes you come off as very superior, judgemental, and by extension immature. Like most people, you favour your own perspectives and judgements. But with maturity comes the realisation that your perspective is just that, one perspective amoung billions. This realisation makes one less quick to judge others, especially on extremely ephemeral concepts like who is self-important and who is not.

It's interesting how one sees one's self and how one actually appears to others. Obviously you feel you have some kind of ground from which to make this judgement, ie you feel you are not like the people you describe. Yet to me you come across as one of the more self important posters on here, not to mention bitter, judgemental, and small minded. Who'd o' thunk it...

Ah, a true connoisseur! A real "poster" poster! Razz

But indeed they are beautiful, and they aren't as expensive as you might think. But I didn't get them in Korea. I have many that I treasure, some of which would result in a semi-ban if I were to post them here (Shanghai product advertising/public decency laws of the 1930s being more "latitudinarian" than Dave's ESL Cafe TOS of the 2000s Wink), though sadly none I'd be prepared to part with. But if you're interested, PM me and let's see if I can help you find something nice.

A teaser...

Another cigarette advert, though without the actual product featured in the artwork. This was common, and you'll find many posters that leave you utterly guessing (unless you read Chinese) what the devil they were supposed to be pitching. It's great fun, great art, and a nifty insight into the attitudes of an earlier, gentler time.
