Does anyone know why some shirts and sweaters tend to widen around the waiste? Save the fat jokes because there's no issue there.
Is there any way to prevent this horrible catastrophe?

I'd like to know that, too. A lot of my clothes seem to be designed for people who are shaped like a square. I am very much NOT shaped like a square, but it's hard to tell with these clothes.

These kinds of clothes are likely mass-produced in North America, where too many goddamn people truly are shaped like squares and/or Jabba the Hutt. I find clothes from Asia and Europe to be of a more proper fit. Where did you but the offending shirts?
