I did check the internet, but there's so many places to see that I'm wondering if anyone can recommend somewhere they really enjoyed.
I'm a girl, so I'm not really interested in prostitution - I was thinking maybe some cool temples or tours on the river, something like that.
Also, my flight lands in Bangkok at 10:30p.m. on a Sunday - will I be able to change my money into Bhat at the airport or is this going to be a problem? |

I assume you will visit the Grand Palace and Wat Po, there are a few river tours to choose from. You'll have no problem changing money. How long are you staying? |

Hey Sweetbear, I'll be in Bangkok for 6 nights - Sunday to Saturday. So I should be able to change money at the airport even at this time? I'm worried because a friend of mine said everything might be closed.
Any river tours you can recommend? |

| Ayutthaya is an hour north of the airport by (slow, hot) train, and well worth seeing. The Riverside Hotel is very nice and quite cheap if you arrange a good deal for two nights with a TAT office ahead of time; try to get a room overlooking the river. Don't stay in the big hotel outside town. You can take a river taxi ride right around the Island that forms the old city. There are a lot of tourists but also some areas with no tourists and everyday Thai prices. I teamed up with a Slovenian couple and we hired a tuk-tuk to take us around to all the ruins for a few hundred Baht. There are a few packpackers' hostels that have terrace cafes and interesting travellers from around the world (I even met a Korean but he didn't last long before he was in the PC-bang next door). It would be a pretty nice, safe place for a single woman traveller. |

The Reclining Buddha cant be missed, Wat Pho and the Grand Palace,a trip to Ko Shan Road, The Emerald Buddha. Bangkoks China town is very cool too Theres loads to do in BKK that has nothing to do with sex
But a word of warning, dont get in a tuktuk even if someone really really friendly offers you free advice of where to visit and they give it to you for a really relly low price, its hte same old scam, they bring you to the shittiest sites, then drop in at some sort of silk factory or gem factory trying to get you to buy, and they're pushy as hell
Also if you tell a tuktuk ot take u to a certain site and he says its "closed for lunch" or something like that, dont believe a word of it, again he wants to ake you on his tour..
Anyway enjoy it, im going back for a few days in June |

Yes, no worries at the airport, it's my favorite airport actually, a lot of stuff going on. I arrived in the early hours of the morning there once, changed my money, got a massage, it was great !
However if you are nervous, change enough for an emergency. Always a good idea anyway.
I haven't taken a cruise yet, have been toying with that idea ( heading up there soon again) but was also contemplating taking the water taxis instead and using that money for something else. Virtual tourist has an excellent forum/travel site by the way :

Hope you have fun

Lots to do!
Stuff that others haven't mentioned:
Check the weekend market at Chatuchak. Giant market place.
Go to Wat Arun.
Take water taxis around town for about B15.
If you do go to Ayuttyha - take the bus up and the river cruise back.
Yes, you can change money anytime at the airport. Avoid the touts go to the taxi queue out front - make sure they use the meter - should be no problem (B50 airport fee - won't be on the meter). Offer to pay for the tollway (not much) - or spent days in traffic.
Spoil yourself and go to the GREAT lunch buffet at Lord Jim's at the Oriental Hotel. About B1000 - but fantastic and sits looking over the river.
Go singin at the Sofitel - whoops - wait - will report back on that later! |
