Well now I'm completely debt free, I figure the wisest course of action for when I start my new job is to sink all my paycheck into turning my room into a happening pad.

So what can you get in Korea to turn a regular apartment into a happening pad. In England I hit Ikea and the ilk and get some cheap but nice things.

Now I know Korea doesnt really do Ikea (though a place in Coex imports stuff from them and makes it selling if for a stupid markup) but what about nice futons, black and white stills, cool lights (lets face it the strip lights in apts are hardly good). Etc. etc.

People offering hints on where to go/websites selling stuff would be greatly appreciated.

I'd like to see some people offer suggestions as well. I haven't changed my place at all in over a year, and it's rather boring. I bought some cheap furniture when I first arrived (my apartment was unfurnished), and I'd like to fix it up.

Take a walk around the markets and you can find some cool stuff cheap. Korean stationery stores also have a lot of decorative items. You can find cool stuff in Korea, but it's going to take some creativity on your part to figure out how you can use it. Not like Ikea where some merchandisers show you some concepts about how your apartment could look.

visit Hrothgar, the evil troll, in Itaewon. If you answer his three riddles correctly, he shall furnish your apartment. However, if you falter, he will devour your entrails. Your choice.

Have you actually done this, Darl? Or are you speaking from hearsay? I ask because from my experience, they don't actually furnish your apartment (or other type of dwelling) in the sense of getting dimensions, layout, selecting the items, materials, colours, etc. or doing the actual decorating. Their assistance is minimal at best. They won't even help you choose the furniture, and they don't care about your budget. That's been my experience anyway, so I'd be interested in hearing if Darl's was very different.

www.auction.co.kr

They have TONS of stuff there...

I recently got a futon, coffee table, area rug, and some decent prints, for a total of around 20. You will probably want some assistance from a K-friend, though.

Well sure, I suppose that's an option for those odd people who don't want to deal with the entrail-devouring evil furniture trolls of Itaewon.

Very Happy

It's rare a post gets a chuckle out of me, but that one did it.

I saw some awesome oil paintings in Itaewon today. It was an idylic korean scene, a small little pagoda in the foreground next to a lake and in the background a big mountain. They came as a set one for each of the seasons.

They were rather impressive, the winter one was fantastically bleak. I dont think you could get away with hanging all 4 in a crappy shoebox apt in Seoul though Smile
