Okay, I'm 28, but close enough.

Thanks to all who answered my last post about the best places to live in or near Seoul. I have some good information now.

I've looked at a lot of the posts on this board and I've noticed that a lot of people recommend a city because of it's great nightlife/bars. As I am something of an introvert, I have never been into the club scene. I just finished putting myself through college and I've had all the frat boys/sorority girls I can stand. I am looking for something a little more laid back. I like playing pool (badly) and I enjoy having a few drinks with friends in a place that caters to people who are a little bit older than the college crowd. I am also more interested in traveling, hiking, skiiing, museums, learning the language, etc.

Are there any places that will be more my speed or have people I will have more in common with? Bundang sounded nice and I got a few votes for Bucheon. I just have to be close enough to Seoul for modern medical care for a medical issue.

Thanks for the help!

28...in Korea, that makes you about 42 give or take a year - depending on how the rice fell, on the first new moon in the year of the dog closest to your birth year, unless you were born in the AM of a Tuesday in Winter - in that case you're 30.

Bucheon? Oh, definately not. Boring hole, that place is.

I lived in Bundang. It's nice. About 45 minutes from Seoul via subway. That is a good area to start.

Or 15 minutes by bus. 45 minutes to the opposite end of Seoul.

Three alleys pub in Itaewon attracts and older (and better, IMHO) class of patron. The food is good, there is a pool table, music isn't at eardrum shattering level and there is a good range of beers and other drinks to choose from. Apart from that, I would suggest Helios or Hollywoods in the same area. People may be inclined to disagree with me, but I like the same kind of atmosphere myself, being well into my third decade.

hey ellie,

you could always look into daejeon? not so fast paced as seoul, a few bars that fit your criteria, plenty of mountains around to climb, seoul is 45 mintues away, beaches are an hour, not so crowded and loads of "long termers" whp havent got their blinkers still on. though there are the frat type boys and girls, they tend to hang out at specific bars so you can avoid them if need be,. dont take all this as gospel, but look into it anyway.

there's only one city with okay bars/clubs.. which would be Seoul.

For laid-back.. maybe Taiwan? Korea isn't exactly a laid-back kind of place.

Playing pool.. almost anywhere in Korea.

Older crowd.. Jag's Itaewon recommendations are good.. although 28 is a bit young.

traveling, hiking, skiing.. maybe better off in Gangwon-do?

learning the language.. that would be Seoul again - tons of Korean language schools to fit in most schedules.

Regarding these outskirts on the fringe of Seoul areas.. why do people choose to live there? Worst of both worlds.. all the bad things of a city but none of the cool things. its like choosing between an apple and an orange and deciding you'd rather just suck on the pits.

actually i'm thinking crazykiwi has it about right.. Daejeon is a smallish city.. still a city.. easy access to Seoul with the KTX.. lots of not-very-interesting bars.. but alright for meeting up with the same friends all the time on a regular basis.. etc. You could also reasonably get into the hiking and skiing without quite as many of the Seoul crowds.

That's not true. There's lots about Korea that you can lay back to an earlier era.

28 is considered old in Korea? Korean mentality is messed up!
Dude, don't start selling yourself short in your 20's. Unless you are married and/or have kids, you shouldn't be restricting yourself.
