I am thinking about getting a laptop, i know this has been asked before, but it all seems to be advice for american/canadian users, where laptops are cheaper than korea. Does anybody know if laptops in korea are cheaper than laptops in New Zealand?

I know i can get an average laptop in New Zealand, which suits my requirements for about a million won. I could send the money over and then get my parents to buy it, take it out of the box and ship it over.

What type of laptype could i get in korea for a million won (i can't read korean yet so i can do it online). would a million won get a DVD/CDRW combo drive, what size harddrive? processer speed?, english windows?, inbuilt ethercard?, etc.

Any advice would be great cheers

For English windows, you will need to by from HP or Dell if you want it provided with the system. Otherwise, have your parents buy it for you seperately and ship it over to you. Expect to pay between 140,000 to 200,000 at least for XP Pro and substantially less for XP Home while XP ME will be somewhere in between.

Don't bother paying extra...just have it sent from home!

well i think i have decided on a laptop the

AUSU A6R
Intel celeron M processor 300 series 1.7 Ghz
533 ram + 512ram extra free
15 inch screen
80-100gb hard drive
DVD read CDRW
built in 0.35mb webcam (don't need it but its there)
wireless built in
english windows

got a few quotes all within 20,000 won in at Yogsan cheapest is 1,030,000 won, without bargaining.

My queston is how much should i end up payin for it, and i have a mate that is looking at the same laptop, if we both went in together and got them both at once how much of a discount could we expect if any?

I'm looking into a new laptop for next month and, Personally, I'm going for a dell:

Intel D Core Duo processor T2300 (2MB Cache/1.66GHz/667MHz FSB)
15.4 inch UltraSharp Wide Screen SXGA+ Display with TrueLife
1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz, 2 Dimm
100GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive
8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
Intel PRO 3945 and Dell 350 Bluetooth Internal Wireless Cards

All for 975USD Very Happy

Why would ya wanna go w/ a Celery@ Processor? Sad

Remember that those laptops have shared memory with graphics. Although onboard graphics have made some inroads, they aren't really suitable for gaming.

Maybe you don't want to game....just saying, that's all.

Then again, with a 15" screen, you will probably only be able to get 1024x768 resolution, so it may perform reasonably...?

As for the 1,030,000 laptop....probably 900~930,000 would be a 'good' deal.

That is a good point about screen size. Another thing to remember is that if you plan to carry it around a lot, the big widescreen is gonna be one heavy beast to lug. I am perfectly satisfied with my 15.4" screen. Like Demo said, though, some programs aren't as "easy" to look at for sure, because it's only 1024x768 on-board graphics. Photoshop can be a bit annoying to deal with, but it's not horrible. It runs fast enough. For surfing, word processing, etc., it's great.

With regards to p-aying for your laptop, most vendors at Yongsan will add a 2.5% credit card surcharge, so keep this in mind. You should work out if paying cash will be cheaper.

When it comes to bargaining and discounts for buying two, they are definitively there to be had. But dont expect much, as the margin on laptops is laughable. Do your bargaining with a smile, if you dont speak Korean, bring a Korean speaker with you.

Its all give and take, if your not happy with their offer, move on to the next shop, and thank them for their time. Your more likely to get a good deal on a quiet day than on a busy one, as the vendors might be desperate to do some business. I would say its better to try to get some extras thrown in than a price discount, like a free laptop bag for the both of you or something like that.

Good luck with your shopping if you havent already done it!

And good choice with the Asus, they seem very solid, been looking at the sexy W5F myself.
