| Just be careful with HP, they put some pretty crap components into their computers so that they can charge a little extra for their logo on the case. My "top of the line" laptop that I bought from HP a little over 2 years ago had the cheapest ATI video card, a CPU that wasn't even USB2.0 ready, and a crappy Fujitsu 5400rpm hdd. I regret taking the dealer at his word and not doing more research before buying that paper wieght. I recently bought an LG desktop and I am very pleased with the components they put in, including an NVIDIA Geforce 6600 video card (I will upgrade that to a 7800GT later on), an Intel 915e HT chipset, DDR2 533 RAM, and a 200gb Barracuda 7200.8 SATA NCQ. All in all, very good parts and cheap too! HP on the other hand, is still using crappy parts. The HP/Compaq computers in the same price range weren't even that great by the standards of two years ago. |

Is there no way to avoid the $ding$ from customs when you ship a laptop from Canada?
Are there precautions we should take to better our chances of shipping stuff that will get $dinged$? |

The shipping you will pay on your computer to get here will be the same as what you would pay to buy an English version of XP. Why not just buy here? It will save you a lot of hassle and the possibility of getting "$dinged$" by customs, whatever way you do it. |

Too late. I also wanted the extended warranty. The laptop will spend most of its life in Canada and I can pretty much toss it out the windown and get it fixed or a new one for free.
Wasn't aware of the customs thing...horrible foolishness that. |
