My school is enlisting my help in finding another teacher. I'm thinking they'd love it if I could use some connections in the States to find someone outside of a recruiter because it saves them all that money. I don't have a problem with this, I like my coworkers and am happy to help, but should I ask for a some kind of bonus if indeed I find them a teacher? And if this is acceptable, what amount should I ask for? Either way I'd be saving them money since whatever I might ask for is less than the one-months salary they'd be paying a recruiter.

And, speaking of, if anyone would like more info, lemme know.

Thoughts?

kosher? Shocked ain't nothing jewish here! Wink

but yeah, of course, ask if you want.

not "bonus", call it "fee" or "recruiting fee" or "finder's fee"

i didn't in finding my replacement. but i'd been at the hagwon for over three years and got along royally with the mom and pop operation, so i didn't ask for any money. but it was pretty painless with a few wanting to go to geoje island.

if you have to work at it to find someone, then yeah. if you wanna squeeze every penny then yeah. or the director/owner ain't been supergreat with you then yeah.

nothing wrong with doing it... or with NOT doing it.

your call.

Personally, I think it's crass to ask for money in a situation like this. But that's just me.

It's not a replacement teacher, just a second waygookin sang-sun-neem (sorry, no korean on this keyboard, I did the best I could). There expanding. Just built a new classroom n'everything. The school has been pretty cool up to this point, so I'm not trying to rip them off or anything, just wanted to know what the rules were regarding this sort of thing. I'm happy to help for free, but any extra money in my pocket is just that: extra cash. So if it's available, I'm not going to turn it down.

Thanks though,

I'd suggest 500,000 won. Half what they'd pay a recruiter & fair recompense for you.

My wife's school asked me to find them a new teacher. Get 700 k

It saves them the time and money of going to a recruiter. Plus recruiters suck big azz anyways.

Though I would only ask for money if I was on the way out. If the second teacher turns out to be a bust who is gonna feel the wrath if you are still hanging about?

Just be happy you'll have some control over preventing them from hiring a psycho. That's priceless.

That's very true.

AbbeFaria, you need to go about it in a very indirect manner. Remember, Korean language is rather indirect, so there's a good chance they'll pick up on what you're getting at. I'd suggest this line:

"So, if you went with a recruiter.. it would cost about a million won? Oh, you'll be saving lots of money, that's really great for the school...."

And then just smile and leave it up to them to begin the next line of thought. That would be a more "kosher" way of requesting money, I think.

maybe you could just bring it up as kind of a joke and see how they respond. offer something like "we can split the difference, a recruiter costs 1,000,000, so we each get 500,000! great idea!" (we being you and the school)
