(1) 6 teaching hours per day, 1:30 - 9:30 shift = 1 hours of extra babysitting and perhaps a dinner break. (they should pay more to consume a whole day like that)
(2) No extracurricular work (including part-time jobs) = If I don't get a cut, you can't have a part-time. or I want to control your life so be at work 2 hours before your classes start to prepare.
(3) You must prepare materials for class(part-time job, no workbook) = I want you to make the workbook for free and save it on to the computer, so I can sell it to students.
Let me think about it. = No way.
(4) If the hogwan does well, I will increase your pay or give you a bonus = It is because I am a good businessman the hogwan did well. ( when the number of students doubles in size.) Let me take you out to a cheap dinner.
(5) You should do better(to all teachers) = The number of students is declining and its your fault because you are bad teachers.
(6) I can't afford it. (although I make 10 mil a month form this hogwan and another 7 mil. from farming out teachers.) = I am a cheap scrooge, the whole world is mine.
(7) You are getting a transfer. = I want to get rid of you, but I would like to pawn you off on another place so I won't lose too much money.
(8)Sick days. You were healthy so it worked out for both of us(when a teacher asks to be compensated for all unused sick days. = We don't have to pay you according to the contract.(I came to school after a few days of puking make brains out jerk. |
Teacher RE-translations: (numbers are mine)
1. The time to negotiate pay is BEFORE you sign, not after. Make sure you know what you are expected to do and get it in the contract.
2. With such a schedule as in number one, you would be doing split shifts with an additional part time job. Not really recommended.
3. Just say "No."
4. Ditto
5. Ditto
6. Advise him that you will have a little talk with the labor board about his farming out of teachers. Amazing how reasonable they become when you have something over them. This goes for lack of medical insurance, non-payment of pension.
7. Illegal. Advise them of this. (Also see above)
8. Why would you be compensated for unused sick days? Unless it's in the contract (See number one) you shouldn't expect it?
It never fails to amaze me how many teachers come to Korea with all kinds of luggage, but the one thing they invariably fail to pack is some backbone. Stand up for yourself, educate yourself on labour law and 9/10 of out ten they will cave in when they realize that they can't push you around. Worst case scenario, you have to find another job, which will be easy once you have that LOR, which the boss will give you in exchange for you not going to the tax/pension office. |
