Hey
I'm new to Ulsan and getting a little bored after a week here on my nige. If anyone can point me in the direction of some cool things to do and see around here that would be great!

Take a bus to Seoul or Busan.
I guess that's probably not very helpful, but Ulsan is boring.
There's Benchwarmers or Tombstone if you're looking for foreigner socialization - where in Ulsan are you? |

If you guys want to meet foreigners, Rachel was right about Tombstone or Benchwarmers. I disagree with her that Ulsan is boring though! I found tons of things to do when I was there. I had enough friends that I was turning down offers to do things literally every weekend, because I already had plans. If you make the effort, and I'm not saying that Rachel didn't, I think you can have a great time. I wouldn't left if I didn't have the great gig that I have now in Tokyo. If something crazy happened that I had to leave Japan, I wouldn't have a problem with coming back to Ulsan (although I'm more likely to check out a different part of the world). Working for the university there would be a good gig.
Go to Tombstone bar in Mugeo-dong, near the university. Just tell a taxi to go to Ulsan university, or Ulsan Tae-hak-yo (university). Their website has a map, showing how to get there from the main university gate. It's about a 5 minute walk from there. Especially on a weekend, there are usually healthy number of foreigners there. I think some of the regulars are out of town for a couple weeks, because of a bachelor party, but there should still be many people to meet (one of the owners is getting married, so a bunch of the guys took of to Las Vegas for a bit). You can make some friends, and then go from there.
Benchwarmers in the old downtown area is also very popular for foreigners. It's a couple of blocks from Shigae tap rotery. Troy, the owner, is a really friendly guy from Newfoundland, Canada.
The website for Benchwarmers right now is a complete joke, but the Tombstone website is decent and up to date. This is it: http://www.tombstonebar.net/. As I mentioned earlier, they even have a simple map to find the place with. The 4 owners are all Canadian, in addition to their Korean wives/gfs. They're all good, down to Earth guys. All of them, as well as most of the regulars, are happy to help out newbies to town. They're pretty used to it. You'd be doing yourself a favour by checking the place out a few times, if only to make some connections.
Also, Ulsan Simin church has a fair number of foreigners going there. Get in a cab and say "Ulsan Shim-in gyeo-hwae". Gyeohwae means church. Even if you're not a Christian, you can meet some people and make some connections there. The guy doing the services, Bill, is a really nice guy from NYC. He'd be more than willing to help anyone out. That man is gold.
The church does a Costco (very large department store with many western products in bulk) run to Daegu once every month or so. You can also place Costco orders with the guys at Tombstone, as they make a run every week or two. Great stuff.
I don't live in Ulsan any longer, but I just left in March. So everything is still fresh in my memory, and I still have connections.
Feel free to drop me an e-mail at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Hey, you went to Grant Mac! I went to uni in Edmonton myself. Here's to an Oilers/Flames playoff series this year!
Anyway...
Isn't the owner's English name 'Ryan' or something like that? I can't quite remember.
Do you work with a foreigner named Phil?
It might be a completely different place I'm thinking of! |

Hi Blake!
Oh yeah, and it's gonna be a long ass year if you're bored after only one week. |

Hi.... uh.... John Henry? I'm guessing you're actually a girl? What kind of a guy says "Oh my god. I so know..."? Well, maybe Evan, but he left long ago.
I guess having my name as my e-mail address, and then posting it, was a bit of a givaway. So, who are you?
