Hey...I have a newish dell laptop (centrino sonoma chip) that only has 512 megs of ram. I want to upgrade this to 1 gig or maybe 2 gigs but do I have to use only Dell ram? Dell says that you should only use Dell ram but I think this is probably BS. Any thoughts?

I have a compaq laptop and of course Compaq said i must use their replacement parts (ram,dvd drive). But Their stuff was twice the price of what i could pay for samsung stuff here in Korea.

Be SURE to get the specs of the ram right first then go to Youngsan. You cant just bang any ram in any comp, especially if its a laptop.

NOTE: Im not keen on Samsung or Korean made electronics overall but I won't pay Compaq's premium.

ok. samsung makes the best memory there is. It's highly likely that dell and compaq just use samsung memory with their name on it. I just wanted to check.

Ram is not manufactured especially for an exact certain model of computer. Not for mainstream consumer computers, to be sure.

Sure, be careful, but I sat and watched the shop put in the wrong memory, and the computer didn't register it. Then we changed it to the right stuff, and everything was just fine.

I'm almost sure you got zapped by static.

RAM is designed to be compatible with certain motherboards, as are the CPUs.

Simply go to the Dell website scout around as if you were going to upgrade your laptop buying the memory from them, and you'll find a giveaway which states exactly what you're memory is. It will most likely be in the realms of PC2700 or PC3200 and an SODIMM if its a new model although a few manufacturers were actually bringing out laptops with the new faster DDR2 RAM so maybe they put that in your machine. When you know whether its PC2700 or whatever else, simply head to Yongsan and there's a number of stalls selling laptop memory, I was quoted approx 50,000 for a 512MB stick or 112,000 for a 1GB. Chances are they will have put 2 256MB sticks in your machine and you'll only have two RAM slots meaning you'll have to discard your old RAM and buy 2 512MB sticks.

As for static, simply ground yourself by touching something metal that is attached to the floor. Whenever I was constructing PC towers I'd always touch the frame but laptops don't have that same option. It's all a little over-hyped the static shock, I've never toasted a motherboard, RAM or CPU in my time.

Check out www.crucial.com

They list memory that will be compatible with your computer. They will even run a diagnostic on your computer, tell you what's already there and list all compatible memory. Their prices seemed reasonable to me too.
