Ok, so it's not about the money...fine. Work at a hakwon.
Ok, so it's not about the time off...fine. Work at a hakwon.
Ok, so basically you are working packed weeks for less money than you could be making elsewhere. Your priorities are odd, but, then again, you wouldn't be the first person to fear change and settle for less than average employment.
Working in Korea is a great thing to do, and you can bank away some great coin. However, the best employees are generally the ones that want challenge and reward. Working for instiututes is for the newbie, I hate to tell you, though. If you are teaching 25-30 hours (or more) a WEEK with terrible vacation time for under 3.0 million, and you've been doing it for years, then you need to consider your options better. I'm sure your boss loves you. Hell, he's making a mint off of you and your complacency. Good luck. If you don't aspire to retire early, do any traveling, or furthur your education, then you are in the right place. Hope you meet someone that shares your lethargy, and that you are happy together.
I do look down on people that remain at hakwons over the long term, and I'll admit it. |

A good hagwon is gold.
You have it, I've had it for over three years.
Why anyone would think less of it than public school positions is beyond me.
The Real Teacher Test:
Does a real teacher want...
(1) 10 students per class or 30?
(2) a hundred students each known by name or a thousand in a sea of faces?
(3) one's own choice of textbooks and extra supplimentals or else a set government-dictated textbook with no side lessons?
(4) one's own complete control of the classroom or a co-teacher of uncertain helpfulness?
If you've got great co-workers, a reliable director and a decent schedule, and you enjoy and can handle kids, then Darl, like me, a hagwon is more like fun than work, though we get a deep sense of satisfaction at seeing progress as our students, whom we have a one-on-one relationship with, indeed learn alot.

That sums up where I work as well except the max per class is 6(outside of 2 classes of 9). I would not trade this job in for a public school job ever and am going to stay where i am for maybe 2 more years whereas after I will hopefully graduate up the chain to a good university job. My supposedly shitty hagwon job kicks the crap out of any public school job there is in Korea.
I am in no rush to sign up at the public school, I know that...
There might be some good public school jobs as well but you can have it... |

Well, my supposedly "beep" public school job kicks the crap out of any hakwon job there is in Korea.
See, I can make sweeping generalizations and talk out of my "beep" as well. |

Ok..good point, let me rephrase..
My very good hagwon position would be better than the vast majority of public school jobs available in Korea.
I am aware that most hagwon jobs are unlike mine but not all of them are bad and some of us do try and enjoy teaching in a smaller environment with small class sizes and good bosses |

As long as you are happy. Still, I cant comprehend getting 10 days or 2 weeks off a YEAR. In 2.5 months my 9 week summer break starts. While I expect to have to do some small camp for 2 weeks of those 9 weeks, it will be small classes for 60-90 minutes a day leaving me with pretty much the whole day off. After that Ill probably get the rest off to do whatever, just like I did during the last summer and winter breaks. You will be working through the summer on a full schedule. |

I get about 6 weeks off a year...i have it negotiated into my contract that I get a full month off a year as well as summer and winter hagwon vacations. yes, I have to find a replacement but there actually is one who my hagwon knows very well and they are more than happy with that agreement.
Most public school jobs I know require their employess to be at their school even during school vacations and only get 10 days off a year...while i know this is not your case Jinju it is becoming very normal...
So I get as much vacation as a good public school job |

The only tim I have to be at my school is when I have a summer/winter camp. My "camps" are small, 60-90 minute classes of 10 students, max. Usually Im finished before noon and can leave right after. If I dont have to teach, I dont have to go to school which would be stupid as theres nobody there. So yeah, I agree that is stupid. But thats usually the case with GEPIK, which I would not work for seeing how the conditions there are getting worse and worse. As far as your job, it sounds good and you were lucky to have found that place. Be it hagwons, public schools or universities, most of the jobs are either rubbish or OK, the good jobs are in the minority. |
