no. i'm just trying to push things along...you know how it is when you're with a group of people outside, and you're all saying..'yea, so where should we go?" "i dunno..where do you wanna go?" " i dunno, i'm easy.." etc...you either make a decision or just end up on the sidewalk all night. |

Yeah, I know. After all the discussion, polls and whatnot I was hoping to see a new thread with a definitive "when and where" subject line. |

I guess it will take a few days to scout out various venues. If I know Zyzyfer, and I do, he will be careful to present us with a few well thought out options. |

Go ahead and tentatively schedule it for Hondae on May 13. (I may grace the event with a cameo appearance to sign autographs, etc...) |

Anyone have a problem with Storm? It's in Hongdae in a nice little piazza-type area with an open-air bar beneath it (sorry I can't be more specific). It's not terribly big (not sure how many people we're looking at), but should be able to hold a god 25-30 people with pretty good booze prices. I'm typically the only gringo when I go in there. I haven't been there in a while, but it had a pretty friendly but dim atmosphere with a great view of the street and buildings outside.
All in all, I think it'll be a good fall-back place. If no one else can figure out a location, this is a nice slightly posh (but very affordable) place that will give us the ability to expand (downstairs is another pretty good-looking place) should we need the space.
Again, I have no skill or ability to reserve the place--all I have is a matchbox with the phone number (322-7603) and a mini-map written in Korean (sorry my home PC doesn't have the characters, maybe I can put something together tomorrow). Joyfulgirl is right--let's at least name a place and go from there. If anyone could call the place and see what's what, that would be just super. |

I was out of town for a couple of days. I did do a bit of scouting Friday night and found a couple of interesting places for after the main place, but haven't really had a chance to scope out places. The former Stopwatch is all I could scrounge up thus far. I'll give it a look Tuesday or Wednesday and see what I can find.

I'll need the map. I've never heard of Storm. |

Alright, folks, here it is--the best I can do looking at the back of an old matchbox.
One of the Korean teachers at my school who is a student at Hongdae (I think) tells me that she's been hearing some good things about the place, so I'd assume that it's still there. I'm going to see about calling them tomorrow unless anyone else has any ideas about where to have this. |

I went to Storm tonight.. it has a good window.. kinda small. 2nd Floor, no patio (not a big deal in itself). Checked the beer prices.. kinda okay.. but.. but..
Well.. actually.. I found an even much better place! (in my opinion anyways)
SHOOTERS AND COCK BAR & GRILL
Pints of Guinness for 6,900 (had one tonight - delicious!). Regular cheapo bottles of beer are 2,300 won.. thats Cass, Hite, OB, whatever else. (Of course many other beer/drinks are available too).
It has an OUTDOOR Patio that goes in and out of the regular bar.. there is also a long bar.. and tables inside and out. In addition, there is a bar upstairs (ice bar setup) but with the same menu.. so that means additional space if its too crowded for some reason. In addition, there is a downstair bar (which I didn't check out).. but will assume its basically just more space if things spill out too much.
Okay.. best yet.. its SUPER EASY to find. Basically get out of Hongik Station (green line).. and EXIT #6. (KFC is right there too I believe).
As soon as you exit you'll see an alley with tents and such.. you'll see Lemon PC, Coffee Bean, Coffee Brown.. they are lined up on the right side of that alley. Just go directly down that alley to you see buildings where you can't go any further. That will be KTF (phone shop) which is directly straight ahead.. you'll also see a SK Telecom right there. Once you are between those two phone shops.. you'll look down that alley to the right.. and *BAM* you'll see SHOOTERS & COCKS in gold letters on a yellow building. There is even a video machine for card games in there (I got the top 6 'Gin Rummy' scores now while I was drinking my Guinness - oh yeah!).
Even best of all.. if people are hungry.. once you go Shooters & Cocks.. you can continue to the next corner street and take a right and there is Margaritas Mexican food with fajitas, burritos, and enchiladas - ideal for those who didn't get a chance to eat or want to get away for a few to get something to eat.
All around a good deal I believe. Someone else go check it out.. let us know what you think about that.

That sounds great Tiger Beer. I'm sure that place will go on the short list. |

Shooters sounds pretty good, though I do have a couple of questions.
First, what are the non-beer prices like? Will those of us who enjoy some Jack be getting shafted when the tab comes? Please don't think me being bitter--one of the reasons I like Storm so much is that they have good hard liquor prices. Obviously if Shooters is alright with that, then it's something to consider.
Also I'm wondering about how well Shooters will work for the more elderly amongst us. For me, at least, I'm wondering if they'll have any problem with cigars. Yes, yes, I know--not if we're outside. Of course, if it decides to rain on Friday then we're going to have another problem. No, I don't know about Storm's policy (I'm going to ask one of the teachers at work tomorrow to call and check), but I thought I'd ask about this. Moreso, what's the environment like? I don't want to be too much of a nit-picker here, just wondering about the feel of the place. |

Not sure about whiskey prices.. they have it though.
Regarding cigars.. no idea.. can't remember if the outside part has a roof or not in case it rains. Its an a highly condensed area.. so would be easy to step out into the main street areas and have a smoke and come right back, if it were to be a problem. However this bar is on street level with open windows and open patio.. so kind of breezy.. so don't see it being a major problem.. but if its cigars.. who knows?
Environment.. mm.. longish bar - maybe 12 barstools? Couple dartboards on the back wall (not sure if they are usable or not). Outside on the patio part (which is kind of mixed with the indoor area - kinda spills right out there. Maybe 6-7 tables outside there? Inside the bar.. maybe another 6-7 tables? Then upstairs is an Ice Bar (connected).. its about the same size and setup as Storm up there (big window overlooking the street with a bar and tables - looks like Storm setup (well Storm with an ice bar in the middle).
I wasn't all that keen with the music in SHOOTERS tonight.. kinda sounds like stuff you might hear at Gold Bar (kind of youngish and hip-hopish).
I was basically looking for cheap drinks, outdoor patio, and big enough space. (3 out of 4 isn't bad - unless you like that music then its 4 of 4). The plus though is the music wasn't very loud.. not sure if that would change another day.. but its a plus for me.
The one important thing however.. someone should stop by on a Friday/Saturday and see how crowded it gets. For all I know, its absolutely crowded which just wouldn't work for us. That could be the same with Storm Bar for that matter.
Honestly.. some of these parties we'd have back in the day would easily get 50+ people. Not sure if this will be similar.. but who knows. |

So, where are we at with this get-together?
I'd hate to throw yet another possibility into the mix, but I know that Gecko's Garden has a 2nd floor outdoorsy area that is reservable. Also, they have a retractable canvas, in case it rains. They have all kinds of booze and the fact that it's outdoors would be convenient for our cigar-smoking posters.
I know it's in Itaewon, and not Hongdae, but it really would be an ideal place and could easily seat 50 people. They also have the Guinness and other great beer selections... |
