I've heard that you can call home using your PC. That means you can call a regular telephone in your home country. I've heard that this is NOT a free service, but is very cheap like pennies per minute. Has anyone here tried it? I'd be interested because I don't have a landline in my apt. here and using the cell phone to call home is a bit expensive (even with a cheap phone card).

One system is Skype. (I guess www.skype.com). I have SkypeIn, complete with a London number - around 30 EUR a year. It costs less than a UK domestic call from here to UK and if I use it to US, it costs around 2 cents a minute.

Of course, you can have a US number. Or get Skype out. All the options are on the site.

BTW, line quality is almost always excellent - but get good headphones and mike set.

I've been using Net2Phone for four years with very few problems. Think it costs me 2.5 cents per minute every time I call home.

My Canadian friend said Skype is a rip off. I used to use InPhonex, before that I used Dialpad, which is being discontinued by Yahoo.

I use Skype all the time to talk to friends in Florida, Texas and the UK. I've never paid a dime and the sound quality is excellent.

I use SKYPE but I don't like it b/c it cuts off on me everytime! I'm in the middle of a call and dead silence. One time I was talking for a good 2 minutes b/f I realized!!! I need a new service.

Yeah, Yahoo sounds good. Dialpad just quit their service and suggested that people use Yahoo. I've been using Skype for some time, but if you make a lot of calls to strange places, it's easy to run out of money...I used my credit card, pay pal...and still used up my money. After you've been a memeber for 3 months, I've been told that this isn't a problem.

If you want to use a cheap calling card, try http://www.cardstation.net/

It has "cards" (you don't actually get a card...just a PIN number) for calling everywhere and you can pay by bank transfer. Plus, if you accumulate over 2000 points, you can send free international SMSs!

You also can setup a Teamspeak or Ventrilo server. I use them for online gaming and to talk to friends around the world. Fairly easy to setup and FREE.

A co-worker of mine swears by Skype. She uses it for at least an hour every day and compares line quality to a cellphone.

Skype is awesome. I have a local (Washington State) number here in Korea. Much easier to call Family, the Uni, Creditors, etc...
