A friend of mine is visiting while on leave from Afghanistan and needs a bit of help with some things I've never had to deal with.

1) He has a Canadian bank card with all the money in the savings account. Is there a way he can access it in Korea?

2) Can anyone recommend a decent hotel in the 50-70 000 won range? Preferably something close to Sinchon.

For number one, I think he can go to any of the major banks, like KB or somewhere, and withdraw the money. I think the service fee will be a little high but at least he can get his money. Tell him to look for the Cirrus or Interac symbol and press the English service button. It worked for a friend of mine at KB who had a Royal chequing acct. I forget the options that come up, but he'll be able to figure it out. Also tell him to keep the transaction slips just in case he has a problem(I'm not sure, but I don't think they give you your balance).

We've already tried as many of the decent ATMs as possible. We even went to the Hamilton Hotel in Itaewon, and no luck. I'll try banks.

I've used my Royal Bank card twice, at two random ATMs and it has always worked. There's a 5$ fee for withdrawing any amount, in my case.

There is a good cash machine in Yongsan station that pays out. It's worth a try. I can't remember the name of the company that operates it though. It's got a picture of a funny little creature on it.

I used my TD Canada Trust card at the 365 bank machine in Itaewon, this is one of the very few places that it will work because not as many machines accept PLUS as accept Cirus.

Try a Hannet machine. They tend to be pretty good about accepting foreign ATM cards.

there is a place just down from the USO heading north to the next st up from yongsan (200m?) called the international something or other ....it has flags for miles can us aus nz etc, about 50-60 krw not bad, but not wonderful...3 star styles I guess. ssssok. Has room service and staff that'll bring ya a beer or two v.v.v.late if yr polite. 1/2 way between USO and namyoung stn on the main drag. Hop in a black cab, they'll tell ya.
p.s. there is an old coulple opposite namyoung stn that does the best ddackgolchi on the penninsula-try it if your bud stays!

Call Seoul Tourism (I think the number is 1330 or *1330 or something like that) and ask them for a hotel in that price range. It worked for me when I was between jobs a few months ago.

I never had problems using my American debit card until coming to Seoul. I've tried about 15 different ATMs in my neighborhood, and the only one I've found to work is the after-hours KB ATMs. During business hours, they have different machines that don't work.
