There were about 12 hits on search, but none answered my question, so here it is:
Has anyone tried to go to Ulleungdo by just turning up at the port? Or, did you book in advance? Which agent did you go with and how much did you pay?
I'm thinking of going to Ulleungdo, setting out from Seoul, in early June. I'm aware that AdventureKorea.com are offering an all inclusive tour to Ulleungdo and Dokdo for the same time that I'm planning to go, but I don't want to travel in a large ex-pat group. They are also setting out the night before - do I really need to travel out the night before? - not something I fancy. I'm aware that there's a ferry from Mokho at 10am. Is that too early for same day train connections?
How many days do you recommend as sufficient for Ulleungdo? Also, will the accommodation and food be expensive?
Cheers for any tips. |

we just turned up, it was fine. I can't remember which port we left from, there are several to choose from. There were plenty of seats available.
We had a great time there, don't worry accommodation and food isn't a rip off, though it is 'island prices'. My advice is to take a wadge of cash with you because we only found one cash machine on the island we can use.
Have fun, it's a great place. |

we spent four days there. There's not much to do, besides getting on a bus and wandering around little villages, along the coast or over the mountain. If i were to do it again I'd take a week, just work my way around the island's villages staying at minbaks. Tasty food by the way, hope you like squid, pumpkin 'yut' and mountain vegetable roots |

Here's a link to another thread where I give info on Ulleungdo including pics
HERE
We booked tickets through a friend who phoned the port. Sorry, it was a while ago and I forget the number of the ferry port. We went from Donghae. Very nice trip.
Take more money than you need. If the weather turns windy you'll be staying longer than you intended. |

Thank you Saint. I did look at your previous post yesterday and had visited the link. I found the photos but not written info about Ulleungdo. Anyway, the type of contrast you make from pictures of grotty Seoul to fantastic island scenery is precisely why I want to go to Ulleungdo. I love islands and sailing. With choppy water and windy weather, it's all the more exciting! (Yeah, I was perhaps the only non-vomiter on the Fukuoka Beetle run!) It's surprising I don't hear of more ex-pats having travelled to Ulleungdo. It looks like a great short break. Is anyone actually teaching there?
I recall seeing some pamphlets with schedules at Seoul train station - I guess I can go there to enquire. But, probably as I'm off peak season, it would seem as if I could just turn up and ride.
Good tip about taking a wad of cash - I hadn't thought about that. |

I wouldn't say June was off season. I used to live near Ulleungdo and when I suggested to my Korean coworkers that I wanted to visit there they suggested I book in advance especially at the weekends.
That was the first time I had been advised to book in advance by Koreans
