Are you kidding me, tell me any war game situation where a beachhead on your back door is not strategically important.....particularly one with such a narrow entrance into a theatre.....it is a perfect entrance and exit point....not to mention its capabilities as a forward fighter airbase..... |

. Is there any mission where the US is going to do tactical war against China from Korea. and that Korea would allow the US to use bases in Korea for that purpose.
Of course were there to be a war China could probably destroy Osan real quick.
Besides , as I said each dollar spent on bases in Korea (10 billion ) is one less for new US weapons systems. Which scares China more?
Forgive me but US forces were not deployed in Korea during the Korea war to project power against China. Why would anyone think that is their mission now? Especially cause most of the forces the US has in Korea are army, not airforce.
So I would be real interested in seeing anyone war game a use for US land forces in Korea against China.

Sure Joo, once a salient was formed that protruded in an arc from say Nampo to Wanson, an invading army would have a perfect entrance and exit point to a theatre of war....landing supplies on the peninsula, while transporting wounded out. All the while, with bases in Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Guam giving excellent strategic and tactical support.....
Haven't you ever wondered why there has been so much interest in Korea????
Also, upon retreat, the whole peninsula offers extremely well defensible retreat strategies and exit points....it is actually perfect for an entrance and escape into the greater Asian continent... |

US doesn't have bases in the Philippines.
I didn't think there has been so much interest in Korea - over the years.
Anyway I don't think the US spends 10 billion dollars a year to keep bases in Korea for a possible land invasion of China, and I don't you think so either. |

That's the thing. All this "pack up and leave 'em to the Norks" bravado you hear on Dave's is based on the assumption that the US has no strategic interest whatsoever in keeping troops here. But if that were the case, the troops would've been gone a long time ago.
The US would probably leave, somewhat reluctantly, if the South Koreans ever got enough guts to hold a referendum and ask them to go. But that's not gonna happen. So we're most likely in for a very long haul of South Korean leftists demanding that the US leave, American isolationists threatening to leave, with the powers-that-be in both countries pandering rhetorically to the popular sentiment, while secretly remaining commited to the status quo. |
What strategic interest does the US have in keeping US forces in Korea?
Anyway the US has withdrawn or will withdraw 1/3 of all US forces in Korea.
You can be pretty sure that if Uri wins again they will all leave
By the way Jimmy Carter planned to withdraw all US forces from Korea.
Japan is a diiferent story the Naval bases in Japan are useful to the US navy.
The US gains almost no strategic utility from having US forces in Korea , during the cold war it did but now..
The cold war ended something like 15 years ago , since then it has been a case of not wanting to be seen as being soft on North Korea but just as much it is cause US does not want to see an arms race between Japan and South Korea. |
Wasn't that more of a threat aimed that the Korean president? |
