What are my chances of teaching in a university? I am a certified teacher with over 20 years of experience teaching English and science in elementary and middle school in the US. I am presently in my third year at the same hagwon teaching elementary-HS students. The last two years I have assisted my director with scheduling, curriculum, and as a liaison between him and the native teachers. I have been told by a few, universities will take someone with only a BA if they have experience.[/list]

You've been here longer than me, so you should probably have met enough uni teachers to know, but I'm sure that if you spam all the unis offering positions you'd get something.

Are you saying you're a certified teacher without a BA? Sounds kinda hard if you want to get a work permit here. Or you mean you're already here? Not clear.

If you do have a uni diploma, you could perhaps go with a foreign/international school which requires subject teachers. You certainly have plenty of experience and as a certified teacher, I cannot imagine you having spent 3 years in a hagwon. Must be a bllooody good hagwon!!!!

Perhaps if you spend too much time in your hagwon, you could be typecast - unis will hire anyone potentially, but they prefer at least some experience of you teaching college age/adult students. They might also not understand why you've not been more ambitious in your job aspirations before - a problem that happened to my friend.

Why don't you apply for uni jobs - that's the only way you're going to find out for sure if you can get one.

Good luck.

yeah thats true that some universities will take BAs who have experience.

the key is to apply to as many as possible.. as well as research from friends and online of other places.

The Beaver is a pro with advice on this. He's posted so many separate threads with great advice on this as this exact question has been asked 100s of times already.

But simple answer.. yes people with BA's do get hired at universities with experience and who are willing to try applying. I've noticed many only ask the question but few actually bother trying or applying.

Withyour experience, you might be better off looking at the Hong Kong NET scheme...which is much like EPIK here in Korea but with much better pay and holidays.

http://www.emb.gov.hk/index.aspx?langno=1&nodeid=1254

Recruitment would be finish for this year but you could contact someone about when the next recruitment begins.

The nice thing about the NET program is that the recognize your previous work experience and you will get paid more for each year you have taught in the past.

Beaver's 'getting a university job' advice thread:

http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=6586&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Beaver's a friend of mine, and I followed (somewhat) his advice to land myself my first uni gig, so I'm proof that his advice works. I still only have a BA (but that'll change!).
