|
|
Hi All,
After much soul searching I have decided that I am going to bow out half way through my contract with a hagwon in Seoul and go home.
In doing this I am liable for half my airfare and half the recruiter's fee (as it is pro-rated on how long I have been here).
My question is: how much is the recruiter's fee likely to be?
It might not be an issue because another teacher was fired from his job here and not asked to pay the recruiter's fee back but I would like to have at least a ballpark figure of what to expect.
Thank you. |

after working at my last hagwon for three years i asked how much it cost them to recruit me and they said 800,000 won
i then said i'd help them find a new teacher for when i leave, "no problem", asking for no money (i could have, but getting a killer good reference letter was enough for me!)
rates probably vary with the recruiter involved and may have changed over time |

My director recently informed us that if we sign another year contract, he will give us the recruiting fee of 1 200 000w. |

On average a recruiters fee is 1,000,000 won but lately with the shortage of teachers many have been charging 1,200,000 won or even higher. |

800 is cheap more than 1200 is too expensive
does your contract state that you must repay the fee? |

Yep. Pro-rated for how much of the contract I have served.
I would be mildly surprised if they ask for it though since the person who I replaced was fired and they still did not ask for it from him. |

You are not liable to pay back the school half airfare unless they paid your full ticket, (after 6 months).

There might be some grey area with the contract. It is written for the cases where the hiring is done from outside the country and I have the job before I leave home.
I came here on a tourist visa though and was a tourist for a month before I started looking for work. The wording of the contract is that they would pay o the airfare up front and, in the case of me leaving early, I would have to pay back half or all depending on how much of the contract I had served. The wording of the contract barely resembles the actual situation but I was assured that they would still pay for the airfare that I had already bought.
Rather than pay back half for an airfare that they bought, in my case they should now repay me for the trip here.

Double check everything with veterans in your area if possible. But, don't let them screw you over. |

If you're a white, good-looking NA female it's quite possible that your boss paid more for you than if you're a South African or Kiwi. |

If you are in Seoul it is possible that your boss paid less.
Many schools in Seoul will pay as low as 700 000. We don't have any schools in Seoul that like paying more than 800 - 1000.
Some recruiting firms charge as low as 500.
Who was your recruiter?
Surely you know.
Like all the recruiters, I am sure he has been at the school checking up on you, taking you out for kalbi and striving to create a sound working environment that you are happy in. I am sure he has tried to keep in contact with you after he received his fee.
Oh wait, this is Korea! Maybe you have no clue who he is. |
