I'd like to make a list of recommendations so that we can find cool books to read during the hot summer. |

Sorry, but all I have is young adult fiction (occupational hazard):
I'm currently reading Cornelia Funke's Inkspell, the sequal to Inkheart (which I also whole-heartedly recommend).

My all time favorite fiction:
Life of Pi
Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
Sputnik Sweetheart
Survivor
The Pillars of the Earth
A Fine Balance
I read these a while back and haven't read all that much lately due to my work load. |

I've tried reading Moby the Big Mammal, too and never got past the first couple of chapters. It's awful. However, "In the Heart of the Sea" is terrific. It's a non-fiction account of the event that inspired Melville's novel. "Sea" is chilling in spots, suspenseful and very well written. It reads like a novel. Highly recommended. The people I've loaned it to agree.
Right now I'm reading Jack London's "The Iron Heel" and am enjoying it. |

Reading Moby-Dick (I still can't believe they beep Moby-Dick) is not pretentious. It is one of the finest works of literature ever written and you need not feel self-concious about saying so. Saying you enjoyed reading Joyce's 'Finnegans Wake'....now that's pretentious. |

Wow, what a great book. I borrowed it from a friend yesterday and finished it already....fantastic. Also enjoyed Pillars of the Earth as well.
The Harry Potter books are a light and entertaining read too. |

Just finished Christopher Moore's A Dirty Job. I've always found him to be a funny, weird read.
Currently reading The System of the World, the last in The Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson. It's a great bit of historical fiction with some great writing. |
