Yes, I'm bored and starting another music thread.

I think I'll be in the minority when I say that I prefer Coltrane, but what the heck. Davis in the 80's just scares the crap out of me.

Oh, no question. I've learned more about music from listening to Miles Davis than from just about anything else I've encountered in my life. The man had about five musical careers in his life.

Davis is clearly more important to the history of jazz and his birth of cool is my fav of the two artists

that said...

I've recently gotten into Coltrane in a big way and am impressed.

But if I had to choose just one... Miles all the way!

Let's cross threads: I prefer Coltrane, the Beatles and Radiohead, and I think the ill-est MC thread is a farce.

Other consolidations? Let's see if a pattern forms.

Coltrane and Davis are often compared, but, apart from a brief period in the early 60's when they actually played together, I never really heard much to suggest they should be compared.

For a start, different instrument!

Secondly, Coltrane died so soon after he really got going. He's kind of like the Hendrix of Jazz.

However, Davis went on to, as one poster said, have about 5 different careers.

Davis, through no fault of his own, also created the most annoying jazz genre. Fusion......aaarrrrgh!!!! Davis did it well on Bitches Brew as an experiment but it wasn't supposed to be flogged to death by dozens of boring muso's who wasted their great technical talent on dreary, unemotional dross.

For me, 'Jazz' was never better than A Love Supreme. Coltrane made the best jazz ever IMO, but Davis made a lot more great records than Coltrane.

It's a tie!!

Dr. John and his piano would give anyone a run for their money. Throw in Warren Zevon and Elvis Costello.

(I liked "Dr. John" when he was the "Night Tripper" (Gris gris gumbo ya-ya...)

Based on my limited sampling of their respective work, I'll go with Coltrane. I think the first jazz album that I really got into was "OM" and it was a powerful cacophony of sound that at least tried to approach transcendence. I bought a couple more of his albums, and I was impressed by his versatility and wide range of expression displayed on tunes like "My Favorite Things" and "Welcome"...

I think that I bought only one Miles Davis album, that being "B1tches Brew" and I liked his controlled intensity and boldness. (I've read that he trained like a boxer so I reckon that he worked very hard to produce champion-caliber music...

I can't count how many times I have tried to enjoy Miles Davis. Every time he released a new record I would buy it (late '60's on), listen, listen, listen, and I never got it. I really wanted to like his music because he clearly was an important musician. (And I played the trumpet.) I'm mostly talking about fusion jazz.

For trumpet give me Dizzy Gillespie, Maynard Ferguson, or, even, Doc Severinsen.

Coltrane.

Similar to the Stones, I think there's a point where Davis should've stopped. See: Live at the Fillmore East.

There isn't any Coltrane I don't like, and A Love Supreme...is supreme.

That said, I love bossanova. Getz/Giberto.

That that said, I suppose I'm still in my top 40 stage of Jazz. I'd love to know some obscure gems. Who's been overlooked?

Oh, and from the other threads:
I was walking through Itaewon one morning and I heard it:

Bah Bah Bah, Bah Bah Ba-Nah
Bah Bah Bah, Bah Ba-Nah

It was Smoke on the Water done to a kind of Calypso beat on horns.

I immediately headed over to the Hamilton CD stand to inquire.

It was Senor Coconut. They rule.

And I am Coltrane, Radiohead, Beatles.

You SEE?

That's three for Coltrane, Radiohead and The Beatles.

Just had a feeling...

Miles by far.

Even his 'sub-standard' material was amazing, if you check out the odds 'n' sods collection "Get Up With It", the bonus tracks on the "In A Silent Way" box set, "Seven Steps To Heaven", "E.S.P.".

In his biography, Miles talks about meeting Hendrix and the two of them had planned to jam together for possible album. That would have been one interesting collaboration.
