Just curious everyone...

my E2 expires on the fifteenth of July. My contract ends the 31st. I didn't enter the country until the 31st of last year but my boss says my visa is valid from the date that is stamped on my passport entry page from my arrival at the airport.

Anyone out there know for sure?

I have to get an extension anyway because I will be working one extra week outside my contract to help train a new teacher. I'm just wondering if my boss is mistaken about how long I'm really allowed to stay without an extention.

When does your ARC expire? Check the date on that. If you are still working beyond that date, then you will be working illegally. You will need to get a visa extension, but you must show an onward ticket before immi will grant you an extension. You can wait up till just a few days before expiry to get your extension.

Don't always take the word of your employer as de facto - sometimes they don't know about what's correct or not as regards immigration.

Not sure how your arrival and end of sojourn are 2 weeks out of sync...?

i have the same problem. the korean immi ofice in boston issued my visa the day i applied for it, not the day i would be arriving in korea. my boss said i should go to immi to reapply for the visa, but that it should be within 30 days of my current visa's expiry. it's not until august for me, so i haven't really looked into it that much. guess i'll be paying attention to this thread.... Wink

I thought the idea was that the visa was only supposed to take effect from the moment you entered Korean soil assuming you enter within the timeframe stipulated by the visa. It should not have commenced when you were in Boston, surely? Check your ARC to see what the deadline is on the card. That is the date by which you have to leave Korea or get an extension.

GOTTA love the confusion.

The VISA in your passport is your ENTRY visa.

IT has a 90 day expiry from date of issue. It will show your allowed period of sojourn to be 1 year from your date of entry in Korea, NOT 1 year from date of issue.

Your allowed period of sojourn is marked on your ARC. Your ARC has 2 dates marked on the from of it (just under your photo).
The first is the date of issue. The second is your expiry date.

You MUST leave Korea or get an extension on or BEFORE the expiry date indicated on your ARC.

If you need an EXTENSION to complete your contract, then simply take a CONTRACT extension to immigration and apply for an extension to your period of sojourn. This will cost w30,000.

If the required period of your extension is LESS than 2 weeks AND you have an airticket out of Korea then you can get this short extension for FREE by going to the immi office and applying for it. (this period [2 weeks] is not written anywhere and is subject to interpretation (longer or shorter) by the official granting the extension.)

You get a 30 day stamp (tourist visa waiver) on your re-arrival in Korea on your way home.

Enjoy your vacation in Thailand and your cruise through here again on your way home.

My previous contract ended on february 28th but my ARC expired on the 25th. I was taken to immi to get an extension...but of course, only after I brought it up twice to my manager. Youj'd think after yers of dealing with foreign teachers, schools would know this stuff!

Thanks for the info. that saved me some searching for answers in a couple months when I'm due to leave. Looks like my ARC expires the day before I'm planning on flying out. Excellent.
