So...I am working in Sokcho. I've been here for 3 months. The first thing my boss said to me was do you mind cutting your hair and shaving your goatee? Things have steadily declined from there. Apparently I've been getting enormous amounts of complaints from middle school girls via their mothers. After months of getting these complaints with no specific, substantial options to better myself as a teacher (Always: they just don't like you.) I got a letter of dismissal yesterday. No warning, just good bye and see you later. And get this. My boss told me that she will give me a good recommendation if I leave town and a bad one if I stay in town. Ridiculous. I feel like the outlaw in the Westerns who is run out of town by the sheriff. So...any suggestions? I don't really feel like I have many options, but I'm not sure if I even want any. Know what I mean? Enough is enough for me and now I'm on the job hunt. So...anyone know of any jobs in a coastal city? I know there are plenty on the job board, but I really want to avoid a recruiter. All the best. |

Do you have a letter of release yet? Have you been to immigration to cancel your visa? This will have to be your first priority. |

So...once I've cancelled my visa, then I'm free, but I have to leave the country right away? If I cancel my visa say now, and then leave when I have a new job to go on a visa run, will immigration know? Thanks. Cheers |

Once you get your visa cancelled you'll be given a 14-day exit order to leave the country. You'll have two weeks from that date. Then you can return immediately on a tourist permit. |

Not to worry. There are always plenty of options.
I know of several schools in Pohang looking for someone. |

Get a tape recorder(hide it) and record your boss saying they will only give you a good recommendation if you leave town.
They want you to do this for a couple reasons. One is that the further you are away, the more difficult it would be for you to file a labor ministry complaint and see it through.
Tell them you need the Letter of Release. You do not want to waist your time searching for a new job without the letter of release.
Make sure it has the letter consists of the schools letter head and most important details. Your name/Alien Registration Number/ their signature/
AND the RED STAMP STAMPED next to their signature. |

Like I said, they had a couple of talks with me. This was the advice I was given.
"don't make Gy... quit."
"try to be more normal."
I am working till the end of the month and they will pay me for the month I worked. What kind of options do I have with the labour ministry? |

try to more normal? wow. you should be in my town. It's small, really small. Farmers mostly. But everyone knows me. The boys and girls think my tats and earring are cool. Yup, got a goatee too, though my hair is short....and dissapearing on top. I'm an old guy. The older folks looked askance at me until they knew me and my family, and now I cant walk down the street without someone inviting me into their shop/business/store to have one of those little power drinks. I think being in a small place can be a delight or it can be hell. If you make a good impression, people go out of their way to welcome you. If you dont make that good first impression, then I think the road is uphill for the duration... |

I'd agree poet13.
A few things
*Would you even WANT to stay in the same town if you think your director is going to bad mouth you?
That said, while I was working for my last hagwon, I had to help them choose a new teacher. Needless to say, they didn't even GLANCE at reference letters.
If you want one for back home, then just tell them, you'd like one for your return to home (wherever that is).

That doesn't sound any good at ALL!

Did you push them HARD for more specific answers?
I'm not here gonna try and judge you but did you change your teaching style, or anything like that? Sure they didn't give you any suggestions to improve but did you change anything?
Regardless of whether you DID make an effort to change or not, I am sorry that your school ended up being so spineless and lame.
Good luck at the next one.
Consider EPIK...they're looking for a LOT of teachers in Busan. |
