My d/l speeds using bittorrent suck, and they tend to "hang" or get stuck all the time. I went to bed last night and two files said they had about 3 hours left on them - woke up this morning and they hadn't moved at all. Grrrr....

I'm pretty sure it has to do with my firewall, but I'm not sure how to configure it properly. I found one tip online and tried it, but no change.

(By the way, I use Bittorrent as my client.)

It's unlikely that it is your firewall causing the problems. Usually an incorrectly configured firewall will allow you to download but not upload.

First questions. How many seeds are there? Are you connected to them? How many leechers are there? Are you connected to them?

Second thing to check is whether you have limited your upload speeds to 60-80%.

Occasionally you will find files that take weeks to download (especially from public trackers). It's simply because there is only one person with a complete copy (i.e. one seed) and that person is only dedicating a tiny fraction of their bandwith (maybe 1kB/s) to that torrent.

Try downloading this torrent. It has plenty of seeds. See what your speed is like.
