|
|
The boss has just told me that I'll be leaving a week before my contract officially finishes. Apparently this is because the replacement teacher has been hired a week early, anyway, don't know why really.
I asked about severance, and he assured me he would be paying me the full severance before I leave into my Korean account.
My first thought is to get that assurance to pay severance in writing, just to cover myself, but then again, I don't know how things really work here, and if having something in writing will be a safeguard anyway. Legally can they say to me at the last minute that I won't be entitled to my severance?
Has anyone ever had experience with this? |

I had a hogwan tell me that they were bringing the next teacher in a week early and asked me if I could leave early(I still had 5 days of vacation time coming) so I said sure. I got my severance but they docked me 550,000 won from my last months pay. I had to take them to the labour board to get the money back when I came back to Korea but get it I did!
Dont be too surprised if they try to dock you some amount for leaving early....they cant do it legally but they may try.
Hope for the best and plan for the worst! |

I suspect your're being set up. If you don't finish your contract, there's no legal requirement for him to pay you severance; and (depending on your contract) probably your return airfare. |

YES, YES, YES.
Get it in writing, because if he tries to pull a fast one then you have proof for the Labour board. If he won't sign and goes on about how you don't trust him and how offended he is etc then he is a dodgy geezer!!! |

None of us know the situation going on. I'd ask the employer why he is bringing the new teacher a week early. He will dock you a weeks pay, and I don't see how you can fight that *UNLESS* you have the vacation time (like Grotto had) or state that you wish to finish the contract to claim your full month's pay.
The severance is yours though. |

Hey thanks for the replies. Honestly I'm happy to be leaving a week earlier. BUT, if on my last day I haven't got all my money owed, I just won't go on the flight they've booked me on and hang around that extra week until I get it, as spliff said.
I hope things go ok though. |
