I have an interview this weekend for a public school position with the SMOE and was wondering what are some common interview questions that I might expect. Thanks |

Do you like kids?
How do you control a classroom?
How do you teach? What is your teaching style?
Typically the questions are not complex but they are meant in all seriousness and your answers should reflect the complexity of the question and the English level of the interviewer.
Don't make long and convoluted answers cause they probably won't understand them (Unless it is an FT doing the interview).
Use the KISS principle... Keep It Simple S_-_-_ . |

What exactly does that mean, 'what is your teaching style'? When I first came to Korea and looked for jobs in person, I heard that question as well, but since I never had any experience, I didn't know how to answer it. Does it mean how do you usually go about teaching your classes? |

Are you a lecturer, stand at the front and just talk.
Are you interactive, walk around and ask questions?
Are you inovative, do you do active/interactive things with your students to get more participation?
Do you get involved in the activities and with your students or do you stand by the side/in front and just "supervise"?
ARE YOU A FUN TEACHER? Are you a boring teacher? Are you dull as dirt? |

Are you white?
When you can you start?
Good School:
What is your teaching philosphy?
How would you handle discipline problems?
What are you feelings on being the only foreigner?
Have you ever taught 40 or more students?
etc. |

Do the SMOE/GEPIK interviews have to be in person or can you do them over the phone? |

Silly question at an interview... But..might have been asked to see how a person adapts to life here (long shot here!).
Questions asked:
What is your teaching philosophy (or some variation of that question)
How do you manage your classes?
How does your experience apply to this job? |

I can't speak for SMOE... but if you are in Korea then GEPIK likes to do the interviews in person. Depending on whether you are a direct hire to the school or through the Provincial Office of Education (POE) your interview location may vary.
If you are a direct hire, the school will make arrangements to meet you at a convenient time close to the school.
IF you are a POE hire, then you will probably have to interview at the POE in Jowon-dong, Suwon-si. It is a 5000 won cab fare from Suwon station. |

Interview questions I was asked for Middle Schools:
1) Tell me about yourself.
2) How does your experience relate to this position?
3) What do you do for classroom management?
4) There are 40 students in a class, will that be ok?
5) Do you like Korean food? Can you speak any Korean? (in relation to the fact that we eat Korean lunch everyday and many teachers don'tspeak English)
6) Can you give some examples of activities you use?
7) What do you think is your best quality as a teacher?
What is your impression of Korean students? |
