Japan passes bill to fingerprint foreigners
Wed May 17, 09:15 AM EST
TOKYO (Reuters) - Foreigners arriving in Japan will be photographed and fingerprinted on arrival as part of measures to prevent terrorism, under a measure approved by Japan's parliament Wednesday.
Civic groups and lawyers have said the legislation, approved by parliament's upper house, risks breaching human rights and invading individuals' privacy.
The new legislation, which had previously passed the lower house and now becomes law, exempts children under 16, diplomats and "special permanent residents" including ethnic Koreans. |

Man, now all those people who hold up Japan as an example Koreans should emulate, will have to think again. |

I got fingerprinted the first & only time in my life by immigration when I applied for a 2nd year here. I was told that was standard -- true?
It didnt feel like a deep violation of my privacy. Should I have been offended? |

It seems to be a tendency in many countries. My advice: get used to it! |

Had to do it at the local police station when I worked in Germany.
German police stations aren't the most light-hearted places to visit. |

Can someone please explain to me how this is a violation of privacy? I've really never understood it. Why is this bad? You're a foreigner entering their country, why shouldn't they have the right to keep tabs on you.

It seems to me that it's really not a big deal, assuming of course that we're all law-abiding citizens. If you're not, stay in your own country and don't bring your criminal activity to the rest of the world! |

Maybe: I am fingerprinted every time I enter the US. Should I too be offended? Or do different codes apply outside US? |

I was fingerprinted the first time I arrived in Korea in 2002. I guess they must keep them because when I came back last year I didn't have to do it again.
It doesn't bother me.

I too was fingerprinted at immigration in 2001 here...do they still do it?...I don't see the line up for it anymore...so I am guessing not...I didn't really care...but the Princess of Seattle I went there with thought she was being treated like a criminal and acted as though she'd been violated in every which way....
...I wish they would bring out lie detectors and do a test...that would be way more of a jolly good time.... |

The point is these things are a slippery slope. First they want your fingerprints, then they want your DNA. Then you wake up one morning with one of those giant radio collars they use on grizzlies. You think we're laughing stocks now ... |

Look at all of you bending over for the man.
Pathetic. |

"Your fingerprints or leave the country, now." Your response would be ...?
(Now be honest. Anything less than whipping out your sidearm will disappoint me.) |
