Grrr. What the hell is wrong with people that sell baby chicks to Korean school kids? What a great way to make a buck, slime bag.
I got a baby chick chirping away right now in the teacher's room.
What do your kids think they're actually going to do with a baby chick short of play with it for a couple days and then throw it in the trash after it likely dies of starvation and dehydration? |

I second that. Same with street/subway vendors peddling tiny puppies (weaned way too early?) and baby rabbits. ... It's totally irresponsible. |

Not much difference between that and ordering a chicken sandwich. |

No kidding! Felt like applauding. |
You don't have to pluck a sandwich. |

In an ideal world, a chicken destined for the deep fryer lives something approaching an adult life, gets food/water, and is created with the noble end of being a nourishing drum stick. These chicks are created as throw away pets and subject to the whim of a child with no experience raising a farm animal. Even if we ate dogs, we'd still be horrified by puppies sold as disposable pets: cuddle your insta-puppy for two days and then toss it in the trash. |

My earlier jab notwithstanding, Pet Lover, do you know that Wendell Berry essay that describes the lives of cattle raised for slaughter? That was a pretty horrifying read. I think you may know the title, and if you do, let us know. |

I wonder if those baby chicks are unwanted "by-products" of the egg industry -- i.e., the brothers of the chicks who will go on to become egg-laying hens?
Warning: graphic content below
I'm not sure what the practice is in Korea, but in North America they often grind male chicks up alive because they have no economic value (or would have more value as fertilizer or some other product). I think it's a myth that animal agriculture can ever really be humane, but in any case I don't see this as a competition between it and the "disposable pet" industry. They're both disgusting, and in this case probably very closely tied to each other. |

Have you ever done any research on just what kind of "life" chickens destined for the fryer "live"? I think that the baby chicks have got it better. I'd certainly take the quicker death lasting perhaps a few days (chick) over a "fryer" chicken.....months of torture. |
You'll notice I prefaced my remarks with "an ideal world". I'm not saying the current state of the poultry industry is a model of human decency either.
Ultimately, we should not sell children disposable pets.
To wit, just because we execute murderers doesn't mean we should countenance murder in all its forms. |

Ill have to agree with mindmetoo regarding the suitability of chicks as pets for kids. Since the untimely demise of her chick, my fiance is still hesitant around all pets. She was far too naive to care for it and ended up crushing the poor thing in her sleep.
While many adults see these chicks as disposable, their life and probable death does have negative consequences on the kids. |

this thread hasd taken a noble turn. In my town, the rage is hermit crabs. In just a few days, I am already seeing empty crab shells in the gutters. They have however, given me an opportunity to teach my kids about the value of life, and caring and nurturing creatures, big or small.
they still taste good. |
