This is straight from the Marmot's Hole...

I guess this was bound to happen sometime. The Segye Ilbo is reporting that a teacher at the Seongnam English Town has been accused of molesting young female students.
The Seongnam English Town Sexual Abuse Countermeasures Committee, composed of six Seongnam womens groups and educational associations, claimed Wednesday that some sixth grade girls from an undisclosed Seongnam elementary school who were accepted into the village complained to their parents that one teacher, an ethnic Korean native speaker, was making excessive physical contact with them.
The girls claimed that during an outdoor class, the teacher pulled the strings of the girls underwear (i.e., gave them wedgies, it would seem), put his hand inside their underwear and touched a certain part of their bodies.
Naturally enough, the parents complained to the English Town, demanding the teacher be sacked. The town authorities explained that the parents informed them that six students had complained of inappropriate physical contact from one of their teachers. They also said the teacher in question took responsibility and voluntarily resigned on May 19.
Seongnam English Town employs some 40 instructors, including 24 native speakers and 12 Korean instructors. |

I'm curious to see if this blows up any bigger? |

What's an ethnic Korean native speaker? Does that imply "native English speaker" (perhaps I'm just being dense...)? Is this what you might call a "gyopo"?
I just got finished writing about unreported sexual abuse by teachers, so I was almost relieved to see this article. Good for the parents for supporting the girls and taking some action. |

Presumably if he is Gyopo he can just get a job at a different place as he has the F-4 visa.
I wonder if this will spark a new round of witch hunts.

If it was a Korean or gyopo it probably won't get very big. Perhaps he's getting a job in a children's hogwan now and they'll be another story in a few months. |

If this kind of thing happened in a western country that person would have been in a lot of trouble.. and he would be extremely lucky if he could find another job anytime soon.. but this is korea and if it were a korean citizen albiet he wouldnt get into much trouble other than to resign.. lol |

The guy, if guilty, should be put on an offender's registry and be forbidden to work with children. Sadly, I doubt it will happen.
I'm nervously awaiting the day when a non-Korean native teacher gets busted for this. Watch the gates of Korean wrath swing open. |

Interesting, the teacher admitted to the offence and was permitted to resign. "I'm sorry, I'll never do it again." Okay, we believe you and won't involve the police, it will look bad for the school. Bye, here's your money, now leave. Will they never learn, he will do it again because there is no punishment. |

Precisely. What went through my mind as I read this article:
1. Sad inevitability about it all.
2. This "English Town" camp thing, whatever it is, it can't be all that old or all that big, and yet they've already got a formal, six-member "Sexual Abuse Countermeasures Committee" made up of women's rights activists & educators? Not for the city or the county, but just for that specific "English Town" outfit??! Jeepers! No, I'm not saying that's overkill or unnecessary. Just saying, "Jeepers".
3. Was that a collective sigh of relief I just heard when everyone on Dave's got to the part about the molester's ethnicity?
4. He resigned. What if he hadn't? The parents were demanding he be sacked, but one has to wonder what would have satisfied them if he'd not been ethnic Korean. Would it stop at dismissal, or would we see pan-national protest marches and calls for retribution from a wide spectrum of K-netizens? |

The story - in case you didn't see the Marmot's post - apparently goes a bit deeper:
Quote: |
An official from Seongnam English Town told OhMyNews that while the teacher has resigned, he is vigorously denying that he sexually harassed the girls. The official also said that during an investigation of the incident, a female native-speaker instructor who was with the teacher in question testified that no sexual harassment took place. |
So did he cop or not? Hard to say what to believe, and I'd hate to presume that A)he's innocent when he's not, B)guilty if he's not, or that C)the girls may be lying if in fact the alleged abuse didn't happen.
And yes, Jongno, I was one of those who relaxed somewhat upon reading that a westerner wasn't involved. |

I for one was sure as hell relieved that he wasn't a "non ethnic Korean native speaker." I agree that this will probably get swept under the rug because he was Korean(-American). |

UPDATE: OhMyNews is on the story now. The paper goes into further detail about what took placeduring an outdoor hiking class, the teacher, a Korean-American, was apparently pulling the bra straps of the girls, touching their necks, heads and shoulders (telling them he was knocking off bugs) and staring at certain parts of their bodies. Or so the girls claimed. An official from Seongnam English Town told OhMyNews that while the teacher has resigned, he is vigorously denying that he sexually harassed the girls. The official also said that during an investigation of the incident, a female native-speaker instructor who was with the teacher in question testified that no sexual harassment took place. Frankly, from the reports, I dont know what to believe. My hunchand this is only a hunchis that theres something funny going on with the girls (given how all nine are from the same elementary school). But like I said, I dont know what to believe; Im just reading the same reports as you. |
Chances are this is another non issue. |

If you're good at golf or at touchdowns, you're Korean.
Anything else, you're a foreigner. I wonder if he likes kimchi. |
