Anybody hear anything about this? A co-worker of mine told me that as of very recently, Canadians no longer need to pay taxes on income earned in Korea (not just non-residents anymore Very Happy Very Happy )

Before anyone says "why don't you check with the CCRA website .... Yes, I could try to find some info from the CCRA but I think we all know how difficult it is to find stuff on gov't website. Just figured someone here might have a nice answer for me.

Sounds like wishful thinking.

If you check the Canada Revenue page for news & developments theres nothing new regarding Korea in over 2 years. (The page is complete & up-to-date -- it has information concerning tax treaties with other countries dated yesterday.)

and the form to fill in is:

Hope that helped answer your question.

This link takes you directly to the form you download:

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/tf/nr73/nr73-04e.pdf

Here's the page with the general information:

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tax/nonresidents/individuals/leaving-e.html

It takes a while to find all this stuff, cuz if you type "non-residence" along with "status", "application", or something else in the search it takes you through a web of information.

If you type NR73, which is the name of this application, you find it immediately. Even though it's supposed to be filled out before you leave, you can do it from here, too. I did twice - *bleep*'d up the first one.

You can get some details here:

http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tax/nonresidents/common/residency-e.html

There's a form that you fill out and submit along with your regular forms. Time out of country and ties are the main factors that are considered for the year under consideration.

You can also look at details of tax treaties Korea has with other countries from here:

http://www.nts.go.kr/eng/default.html (click on "Tax Treaty" then "Canada") - Doesn't look like there are any recent changes, but I could be wrong.

...guess this has become a triple-post of the same info...

Follow the schwa link.

It covers the issue well.

Also there are ways around primary and secondary ties...i.e. you do not need to seel everything...sometimes a name transfer suffices.
