The contents of a poorly written text posted at a now notorious expat forum has landed it in hot waters again. The text in question looks very suspicious to me because of the type spelling and grammar mistakes that were made by its author.

Marmot's Hole has more on it.

Does it mention the word 'Canadian' anywhere in that post?

The poster mentions Chapters and Zellers so there's a Canadian connection there.

Finally, someone caught on. Good job, Hyalucent.

So, what do you think of the text?
I suspect it was written by a Korean teenager for so many different reasons.

Bitter Kyopo maybe, but can't see it having much of an effect on us. Really, what did Englishspectrumgate change here? Nothing IMHO.

As much as I like to generalize, I can't say for sure either way. I could pretend to be an FBI profiler for a moment, if you like. Wink

I've taken a look at the posts on English Spectrum and it seems that there are a lot of posts that I do suspect are written by gyopos posing as teachers (the masterbation [sic] post, for example) more so than before SpectrumGate.

This one I am leaning towards believing it to be an actual teacher, save for a couple of considerations.

In favour of it being an actual teacher:

As pointed out above, it references Canada, but without saying "Canada". A Gyopo trying to target Canadians would probably have come out and said the country name at least once. Instead, the indirect references roll off the tongue nonchalantly, which to me also implies the writer has spent time in Canada.

The praises and critiques of Korea, and Korean women too, are not the typical fare. Gyopos tend to mentally block the idea that Korean women would actually enjoy dating foreigners and instead concentrate on it being nothing more than a lucky case of nefarious seduction. While one might throw K-Biotch around for the effect, they don't often bring up the multiple dating penchants of Korean princesses, or that they would be willing to be the first ones to give you a call on the phone.

Same for little passages, e.g., like the bargains Westerners get. Most Gyopos I met were convinced I would be automatically overcharged for everything, and did not want to admit an ethnic Korean might give me an easy go of it.

Quote:
In Korea, you don't have to hear what people are saying. You can tune everything out, and just think about what you feel like thinking about... In Korea, you don't have to communicate with your relatives all the time.

This is also something I would have a hard time expecting a gyopo to conjure up. It smacks of Indo-European independence fixations and I'd propose that it would take one to suggest this is a benefit. Most gyopos I met were bitter because they were struggling for inclusion and acceptance into native Korean culture.

Also, the kind of Westerner who would be damned to a life working at Walmart -- or at the least fears it -- is just the same kind of person who would post something like this, think it's cool, and be too naive to imagine it would attract flack. Walmart doesn't hire rocket scientists, after all. There are a lot of successful people on this board but we can't deny there are hopeless cases too, and the ratio of hopeless to successful seems a lot higher on boards like EnglishSpectrum.com or KoreanESL.com.

The email address bothers me though. I did a search for it and only came up with one reference from an obscure guestbook:

Quote:
I worked in Cooke city for 4 months in 1973. it was a long time agobut I remember it so well. It is a great place to make friends and have a great time. I drove through is late september 1997 and the memories just flooded back. many things havent changed one bit. I want to return this summer asap. to all the great people I worked with I send my very best wishes!

If the owner of stantheman was of working age in 1973, what are the odds that he is still so fearful and critical of a job at Walmart back home? The guy would be in his fifties by now. He also says he's from Sedalia, Missouri which puts the whole Canadian indentifications out of whack. Could Mr. Stan Jackson's email have been entered on English Spectrum falsely? In that case, does it shift balance back to the theory that it's a gyopo imposter?

But the joke's on them, cause Zellers is owned by HBC, which has been bought by an American company!
