No English TV Service for World Cup Matches
English-speaking football fans in Korea eager for next month's World Cup matches will not be able to watch them with English commentary.
"We didn't discuss an English service issue when setting up our World Cup broadcasting plan," said Shim Jae-heun, a KBS programming producer in its World Cup team. "For that kind of service for minor groups, for example, there's a sign language service we started recently. We're only in the beginning period and have a lack of experience, budget and resources. "It might be possible for KBS to offer English-language services someday, but Im afraid it may take quite a few years," he added.
... English commentary would be available in such countries as China, Vietnam and Hong Kong, but not Korea.

99 % of people in Korea are Korean. What do you expect?
And there's plenty of online opportunities: pay $4 u.s. for a month's LIVE feeds of whatever sporting event at www.streamtvnow.com and see the exact game you want with English commentary live and with an excellent feed, the stream is so good that I forget it's on the computer. Not HDTV but pretty darn good, not disjointed, it's smooth, unlike many streams in the past. |

Korea and Japan are entirely WIRED for Internet-based coverage if anyone so desired, so a problem doesn't exist.
And please don't tell me you see any connection between English commentary for soccer and Korea's dream of becoming the premier logistics, shipping and economic trade centre of Northeast Asia. Please Mr. College Professor! |

I-guy..come on man....why would they provide English commentary on TV here???
It makes no sense.....
Do they provide Korean commentary on TV back in Canadian cities where Koreans live?
Do they do it it NZ or OZ?
Or....do Koreans have to pay for a satelite dish and watch the game on a Korean channel...hmmmm...theres a crazy idea.
RR...this is shocking...is it in any way related to your salary and the injustice you are suffering of not being paid on the scale afforded to Harvard Professors of Nuclear Physics. I say...keep fighing the good fight.
More headlines for you RR:
Korean fans to cheer for Korean team at World Cup!
Italians wear team jerseys to game!
Teams in World Cup represent a nation

hmmm indeed....
Whats your point?
English channels here have Korea sub-titles...that seems to make perfect sense.
Korean channels back in Canada (there are none except for community channels (i.e. local tv channels))?
There may be Korean channels in the US but why would you need English subs there...who watches those channels...except...Koreans? I doubt Billy Joe Bob in avg city USA would turn on the Korean channel....
However...you can get Korean channels throught satellite feed.....or internet.
As for the WC in Korea...get online if you want English commentary.... |

Or why not turn them on and learn the language.
Also if you want to watch Korean movies...rent the DVD..they have English subs...simple solution to your dilema...
Or sit there and stew about the fact that Korean networks in Korea will not show the games in English just for you and a few other fellow teachers.
Or..buy a subtitle decoder...they work... |

I believe there is at least one now, called KBS World (or something to that effect). It broadcasts Korean shows with English subtitles. I'm not sure if it's only available on satellite or what, but it's a fairly new channel that I believe KBS started up a year or so ago.
I tend to agree though...why would there be English commentary available in Korea, on Korean channels? I know Koreans are 'crazy' about English, but I doubt there would be nearly enough of a market to support it. |

For the first time in a long time I have to agree with the H man here. If you are that desperate for English commentary, hook up a live feed on your comp to BBC 5live or another English radio broadcast. |

whats funny any bar in thailand will get you english coverage of the matches. I watched the final on Lamai in 2002 with it
some days Thailand is further ahead than Korea in being foreigner friendly.
its where I plan to watch a majority of the matches |
