In the SLP I was at (Godeok station next to the E-mart) had very little in the way of teaching aids, the teacher's computer had no internet, the office computer with internet was bogged with a virus and had no printer. The shift was for 4x80 minute classes (320 contact minutes per week) and had only a 10 minute break between. I was told before I went there that it was a 6x50 minute (300 contact minutes) class schedule with 10 minute breaks. The extra 20 minutes per day meant teaching an extra 83 unpaid hours in the contract year.
My supervisor spoke only limited English and the other Korean staff had even lower abilities.
I left after 4 days and I had more than 3 years experience here in Korea at the time. If the lies were that dramatic and noticable in the first 4 days, I had no inclination to spend a year there.

Now for your school.
I interviewed at that school about 2 years ago... I declined their offer... they seemed a bit anal and I wasn't that desperate for a job...
I doubt that the boss has changed much so you better check with the teachers there and ask SPECIFIC questions about pay, overtime (creative book-keeping and they never used to pay it), working hours, classes and class structure (still 80 or 90 minute classes?) holidays (when, how - they didn't allow block holidays)), weekend work and housing.
There are better choices than SLP..(AKA slave labor program). They have a franchise contract and typically refuse to negotiate anything. It is a crap contract... but as much depends on your relationship with your boss as the paper... see how the current teachers are doing... <- note the plural there.... |

Thank you, that is very helpful. I was thinking 80 minute classes are kind of a bit much. And the director did seem a bit too serious with me on the phone. |

Hey r. I'm not sure if you got this on your other thread b/c I wrote it pretty late, so I'll repost my thoughts here just in case:
I'll offer my two cents...I lived in that area for about 7 1/2 months (In Bongchun). When I first got there I was really excited to hear that infamous Seoul University is. But tbh I kinda felt the place was a bit of a let down in terms of what I was expecting. I thought it would be booming with college kids running around have a good time everywhere (kinda like Sinchon or Sincheon). But it was a lot different...seemed like the students usually were on campus or went somewhere else to have a good time.
The place kinda feels like Dongjak Gu to me. It's centrally located in Seoul so you have easy access to lots of different places, which is good because the actual area itself is kinda boring. The residents are good people and I really met some of my closest friends there, but in terms of living/working there I think it's location is good but it's not the most exciting place to be. |

If a school is talking about 80 minute or 50 minute classes, it is worth bearing in mind that may mean that they don't want to pay you for the remaining 10 minutes.. which you will likely spend in the school, waiting for the next class. Have it in your contract that you get paid for the full time. |
