Moved: Thought this forum would be more appropriate.
I'm moving to Hongdae this July and I really want to get involved with some music projects. Bands, jams, duets, etc... Currently I do not have any drum equipment in Korea, but I will go home for a couple weeks in June and bring back some parts so I can purchase the rest later. I've been playing drumset since I was six, played in a couple bands, and had a percussion scholarship in college, so music has been apart of my life for a long time. Now that I live in Korean, I need to reconnect with my first love because I'm sick of air drumming.
Also I'm up for any suggestions on where to play? Open mic? Musician circles? etc... |

There's a cafe/bar on the main street heading up to Hongik University called "Drummist Cafe" that you can check out. It's mostly hand percussion, but there's a drumset there, too. There's also another cafe (that I've never been to) near the bar "Aura" in the Hongdae area. They've got a number of electronic kits set up in the cafe - I assume you just buy your coffee and play. There's also a drum institute in the Hongdae area where you can take lessons for 100,000/month (2-3 lessons/wk). You can go there anytime and practice even if you don't have a lesson that day.
And if you're interested in electronic drum kits, I'll be selling my Roland TD-10 kit in a few months... |

I listened to the songs you linked, good stuff. The drums in Two Months are fun. Singer's voice is sugar. I guess you all broke up?
I'm staying pretty near to Hongdae and I play bass and always enjoy jamming with a good drummer, but not really interested in a band. However, I don't have an amp over here yet, and the D string just popped last night. So I gotta trek some stuff down, if anyone can recommend a good place.
Conor, have you thought about where you're going to be able to put your drum set? Even if your apartment is big enough, I'm assuming it won't make your neighbors too happy to hear you pounding on it all the time.

If I were you i wouldnt bother getting a kit for here for the following reasons..
First as mentioned above, unless you ahve a house, drumming will not be taken to kindlyt in apartments
Second, if you actually form or join a band, which i hope you will(good luck btw) you will eb rehersing in rehersal rooms- which are very cheap here and very well equipped with full pa n full kt. All for like 12$ an hour- split btween the band.
Third, when you gig, all the venues have house kits, some actually very good - compare dto what ive experinced gigging in other places. So youll never actually need to bring your own kit. YOu could do with bring your own cymblas and probably snare too but apart from that theres no need..
The hassle and cost of either bringing or buying a kit here is just not worth it i reckon.
What I would do, bring your snare and favourite cymabals. Possibly buy an electric kit- even a small one so you can practice silently at home on headphones (theyre alot cheaper than they used to be u know).
Failing that just buy a few practice pads to keep the rythm up btw rehersals
Good luck anyway, im sure youll find a band, drummers always in demand. Youve got good experience though, dont settle for shitty band...
good luck |

I'm not going to bring a whole drumset or even buy a full kit. I'm just going to bring back a DW snare and Zildjian K ride bring it to where ever I play. Get your shiet together and PM me your number or something and we'll get a studio. A good bassist & a good drummer are like peanut butter & jelly. |

Yeah, good idea with the 2 essentials. Ride and snare. That's about all you need.
When are you arriving in Korea? I expect to be on the hunt for an amp and new strings within the next two weeks. |

I'm in Bundang-gu right now finishing a job. After that, I will go home for a couple weeks and come back to start a new job in Seodaemun-gu. Go to that big music outlet in Insadong. They've got everything. |
