Hi there,
Once you have your Alien Registration Card you can get a cell phone and an internet connection. Im not sure if this applies to the prepaid phones, where you purchase minutes everymonth, but with a regular account phone you have to put down a 200,000 won ($200) deposit. You get this money back when you cancel your service and pay your final bill, which you can do at any of the many phone shops around town.
As for internet service, just ask a Korea co-teacher or the secretary at your work to call an internet provider in your area. They will usually come out the next day to get you set up. I have the slow internet and pay 40,000 a month. It works fine and I dont feel any need to upgrade to the 70,000 a month service.
Your computer from home will work fine here. You shouldnt even need a converter for the power because most western computers are equipt to handle both kinds. You will need an adapter though. You can pick one up for a buck or two before you come or you can get one here. Computer are more expensive here, so you want one at home you are better off bringing it.
Good luck with you move and have fun in Korea. |

DAMN.... gotta love current mis-information....
This is CLOSE but NOT completely accurate.
First: Cell phones -
his has been covered many times before and is in the stickys.

You CAN get a cellphone new or used in just about any shop but you may need a translator to help you.
You CAN get monthly service billing or a "CARD PHONE" that uses prepaid time.
IF you get a card phone (read prepaid time cell phone here) there is NO hookup fee and no deposit and no monthly fee. You simply buy the phone and buy time as you need it. Card phones are about 4x more expensive per minute of talk time than monthly ones. All you need is your passport.
IF you get a phone from SK or KTF then you need your ARC, possibly your passport and a DEPOSIT of 200k-250k won PLUS the cost of the phone.
If you get a phone from LG you do NOT need to make a deposit.
You DO need your ARC, PASSPORT, BANKBOOK that has been open for more than 3 months and the cost of the phone.
If you get a card phone there is NO CHARGE for the hookup fee.
If you get a monthly plan there is a 55k won hookup fee.
If you want a phone shop that is willing to assist a foreigner then the shop at Yeongdongpo-gu office (Purple or Green line) subway stop (out exit 3, walk straight ahead, cross the first light and it is the right hand one of the 2 on the corner. Ask for InSook) can help you. She speaks English and is willing to assist a foreigner to get a phone. This is 2 stops away from the Seoul Immigration office.
For internet service you either need your ARC and bank account book or your school to sign for it. The information is at:
http://www.megapass.net/v_support/prd_lite.php
The phone number is at the bottom of the page.
As for bringing your computer from home, if it is a laptop, then no problem. Simply buy a plug adapter when you get here. They cost about 1000 won. If you plan to bring a desktop, it takes a lot of space and weight in your luggage. If it is a top end gaming machine... then go ahead, otherwise you can get a decent entry level machine here including LCD monitor for under $650 and a bottom end machine with CRT for $400..
Check the information in the stickies on the technology forum.

I really dont see where my misinformation was. My statement may have been a bit ambiguous or not as detailed as yours but it wasnt wrong. I said I didnt know how the prepaid phones work and when I said you needed your ARC card and a $200 deposit to get a cell phone, I meant that you needed that to get a monthly fee service. I assumed everyone would know you still have to buy a phone. Give me a bit of a break. Nobody else had given the guy any info and I was at work so I needed to give a quick response. If he was confused he could have asked for clarification. |

Prepaid cells are good. I got mine for 70,000. I'ts 10,000 for 30 minutes of calling out. I don't use mine too much. 20,000 lasts me about 2 months. Depends. I make my calls as quick as possible.
I pay 37,400/month for my KT service. I think it's 28,000 before other charges. Not sure what those other charges are. It's a 100 kbs hook up. So, it's really fast. |
