Yeah, sounds like the dumb gnats. They arrived en masse when I was being less than tidy when spring first rolled in, but now everything's relatively clean and yet I've still got a few freeloading off of me. I usually don't do anything about them unless they're sitting there on the desk in front of me or something.
Off topic, but what are those crazy centipedes with the two huge antennae or tails or whatever that are striped? They look poisonous as hell... |

| I killed a couple of those a few nights ago. At first I thought they were moths, which got my girlfriend to scream. She thought I said mouse. |

Q, I still say that I will provide proof that I did what I said I did. There is a guy over at S.B.S. in Yoido who can prove that I'm not full of it. I got government docs to buttress my claims, too.

At least she thought it was something else. I saw a chick scream because of a rabbit the other night. A RABBIT. The plump little fluffy things that go hippity-hop and love to make babies. What on earth drives a woman to scream because she sees a rabbit? |

The best part was after I killed the bug, with the help of my cat, I picked the cat up and brought her in to see my girlfriend. My girlfriend screamed, confused by the cat's vague similarity to a rodent. |

| Besides covering the drains, is there something I can pour down the drains to kill them? They congregate in my bathroom and near my kitchen sink. I found about 10 of them in/near my sink, and on the dishes that I washed this morning. They obviously love water/humidity. I don't have any garbage or fruit laying around, so that's not the source. These bastards are pissing me off cuz they keep showing up even though I kill as many as I can every day |

| Are they kinda soft and smear into a black dust stain when you smush them? I think they are much bigger than a fruit fly, but maybe 1/4-1/3 the size of a regular house fly. You can see the wings on them and they don't fly tons, but sit on the walls--if this is what you're dealing with, I had 2 reasons given for their existence/appearance. One, they do like water, and 2, they like dirt/dust. And once you have one, they seem to spawn. I never figured out where they were coming in from, but covering drains is a great idea, and give your apartment a good cleaning with diluted bleach and water, or another strong disinfectant. |

Zyz--we do, too. We had to leave her in Korea, though we really wanted to take her home...but with 1 month in SE Asia after our contracts, and living with allergic in-laws for 4 months before moving to Portland, we couldn't do it. We left her with a Dave's member in Seoul and often think about her--her kitten pix is still up in our computer room.
How long do you think you'll stay in Korea? I just finished my MA in Education last month and got a sweet 1st year gig in Arizona near Lake Powell/Grand Canyon. We close on our 1st house in less than 2 weeks! Life has been pretty good and I still love teaching

They sound like Silverfish, especially if they race around really fast and are hard to catch; but it's hard to say without a picture. I'm pretty sure that Silverfish aren't poisonous. At least I don't think that they are. Many species of asian centipedes ARE poisonous to humans, but I think that you would recognize a centipede if you saw it. I hope so anyway. Their poison ranges in toxicity from bee-sting level to really deadly, depending on the species. They don't move that fast, so you can usually crush them with a boot or whatever. I'm not even sure if Korea has centipedes. In Indonesia they are everywhere even remotely wild, like your backyard.. And they are the one insect (besides mosquitos) that everyone goes after with a vengeance because they can be very dangerous in the proximity of children playing.
Q's bugs sound like "beer bugs" but that's just a guess without pictures. Everyone from north of the Great Lakes knows those bugs though. But I'm not sure if Q is a Canadian. |

I'm not Canadian. I'm pretty sure they were gnats.
I say "were" because actually, they've all disappeared. Since I made the OP a few weeks ago, I've seen about two. It was so bizarre. Literally, the same day after making the OP, the problem went away. Perhaps they were just a figment of my imagination? |

I did some hard core cleaning in my bathroom last night, cleaning out all the grates near my shower, the sink, toilet. Then I boiled 2 pots of water and poured it down my shower drain, waited 30 minutes, then poured a bunch of bleach. I closed off my sink drain and make sure the shut the door tight to the bathroom. I killed about 3 this morning, so hopefully they have started to die off.
Justagirl - yeah, they smear into a grayish stain that is hard to remove from my ceiling. They aren't the smartest kind of bug because they just sit still as I approach and smash them with my thumb. HOpefully they will be gone within a few days, cuz I killed at least 30 last night |
