Someone on another message board had a great comment about the French attitude towards soccer.
| Quote: |
| Even though France hosted and won the World Cup in 1998 the nation didn't stay football-crazy after the competition was over. The European Championships were hosted in Belgium and the Netherlands during 2000 and didn't attract anywhere near as much attention. As one French friend put it, "Telling people that you're a big football fan here is like bragging about your porn collection - people give you funny looks". |

| Well, I was not in Korea during the 2002 World Cup, but since Korea was out after the first round games, that must have been a real blow to Korea, since they were the hosts. The games continued being played in Korea, but Korea was not playing. hmmm |

| Although, soccer is not my favourite sport, I have always played it and played on my high school team. I am pretty excited for the World Cup, so I could care less. The only thing I don't like about soccer is the diving. Sometimes I have to turn the channel because of it, but other than that, great game and exciting tournament. |

| I am really excited by the World Cup. Im a Canadian but hockey does nothing for me. What skills does hockey test? How to use a stick? Anyway, I always found the game pretty marginally interesting. The world agrees with me. |

WHAT?!?!?!?!
That like saying "what skills does soccer test? How to use your foot?" That would be rediculous. You need much more skill than that.
What skills does hockey test? How about eye-hand coordination, skating and stamina to name a few. Sports Illustrated (I think) had a report showing hockey as one of the most physically and mentally demanding sports. (I believe it was put 2nd, but I could be wrong) Anyways, if you don't know anything about hockey, stop ragging on it. |

Well, perhaps you hockey fans should follow your own advice and stop ragging on soccer. Anyway, Im not a fan of sports where you need 50lbs of equipment per person just to play it. Its a silly, marginal little sport and thats it. I actually quite liked it back in Canada then I grew up. |

I am pretty sure I said that I liked soccer and always played soccer. So, who are you saying "you" to when you respond to me.
You wear the equipment because skate blades can slice open your skin and if a puck hits you, it could break your bones. Tell you what Jinju, come out and play hockey with me sometime, with no equipment, and then you will understand why it is needed.
Just because it's a marginal sport, doesn't mean it isn't good. Aussie Rules Football is awesome and that is only played in one country. Does that make it silly? |

It's COULDN'T care less.
COULDN'T.
"I could care less" makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Where did this mind-numbingly stupid phrase originate? |

Okay, are they gone now? Good.
So, W/T/F is it about any team of anybody playing games that inspires such fervid devotion, devotion that can lead to fist fights and rioting and people dying over it in the streets after a disappointing game, match, pitch, ad nausueam-finitum? Some of the people I love most are like this -- live and let live, I always say -- but I still find it to be one of the most puzzling things I know about humankind. |
Ese Hellinas? Your user name means teacher in Greek
AEK, Olympiakos, Panathinaikos, ever been to a Greek soccer game? Ya, maybe not as crazy as the Brits, but still.... |

Stin kardia mou eimai Ellinas, so yes, my sly user name is busted open.
No, never been to a game of podosphero (football in Greek) in Greece, but I've seen a few of the ensuing riots. Does that count? |
