Car seats now required for children
When traveling in a car children under six years old must use a prescribed car seat with the seat belt on, either in the front or the back seat, the National Police Agency announced. Drivers who do not comply will be fined 30,000 won ($31), the agency said. Under the revised laws, children under 13 years old should wear safety helmets while riding kickboards, inline skates or bicycles. In case of an accident, parents of a helmetless child will face problems in filing an insurance claim.

About four out of 100,000 children under 14 years old died in traffic accidents in 2003, the highest rate among OECD countries.

yes... its about time - like about 20 years too late...

but although the laws are now there - will the police ENFORCE them? - or just turn a blind eye like they do to everything else.....

Hopefully this will mean I won't be perceived as the difficult foreigner when we go back to visit.

Yeah, that HUGE 30,000 won fine will really do the trick! Rolling Eyes So, does this mean that taxis will actually bring the seatbelt clasps out of hiding in their backseats? I kinda doubt it! Although it's a step in the right direction, I still say Korea should focus on combatting corruption and enforcing the laws that they currently have in final writ before making new ones.

My thoughts too!!! Except I'm here now.... But I'm glad it's the law. I just wish the fine would be much much higher so that I'd know 100% that my inlaws will always comply with it. Without that assurance (and a few other things I'm not sure about yet), I'm not sure I'll be able to let them babysit.

Yeah, now it will just take 20 years to implement...

You hav to remember here that just because it becomes law doesn't mean it will be enforced.....
