Good for you. Bunch of tards looking to pocket your severence. I wonder if it was one individual looking to pocket it? You never know.

They really do think that we are afraid and that we won't do anything. It's "can't hurt trying" crap until their backs are against the wall.

Back in 2004, I had a good experience with the labour board (in Cheonan) as well. My case involved being fired with one day notice (you should get 30 days notice or 30 days pay instead in lieu of). I basically got the equivalent of 2 mill. in plane ticket/cash at the end.

So if you are gettting screwed, go to the labour board! They really can help. Hopefully the hagwon I worked at will think twice before screwing someone else.

How many months were you into your contract? I've read that you only need three months in before notice should legally be given. Others will argue that it's six months.

nice job.

The Labour board in Korea do a good job from what I've heard.

Some Korean bosses are scum (not all) and need to be taken down. The labour board can help people a lot.

I might need them sometime soon.

Forget Teacher's day. We need a labour board day in this country.

I was 10 months in when I got fired. I have heard the 3 month and the 6 month thing as well. Not sure which it is though.

Also, you need to have more than a certain number of employees ( 3 or 5?) working at your place so it goes without saying, don't ever work for a place that only has 1 or 2 employees because you don't have any legal recourse if you get screwed.

Proof of what us long timers have been killing ourselves to tell you guys for years: the Labour Board is there to protect you. If you've been cheated or abused by your boss, by all means file a complaint. Get in touch with these people if you don't know a Korean speaker that can help you.

Please be respectful. These people are there to help you.

If you want to file a complaint from abroad, contact the closest Korean Embassy or Consulate.

Sounds like a positive story - thanks for sharing, wilamusa. Although you said your uni's excuse was that severence was included in your gross monthly salary, I just wonder whether your uni had been opting under a private pension scheme? Apparently unis are not obliged to pay severance if they contribute to a private pension program. I also wonder what was stated in your initial contract regards severance?

We were right about this; no mention in the contract is required to guarantee you this benefit.

That's exactly what I thought and I'm glad you made your post here.

Check out this ad: http://www.eslcafe.com/jobs/korea/index.cgi?read=19098

The university is advertising for a professor and:

"* We are not giving the severance pay. A successful applicant will have to join The Kookmin Faculty Pension Law for the retirement pension. "

I think a lot of universities are getting some bad advice thinking they can avoid paying severance, which is required by law. This is a trend.
