As for South Park, "Blame Canada" was funny at first (just because it's South Park. Um, whenever I've seen South Park, I was usually with a bunch of high/inebriated friends who used to tape every episode, so everything's funny when you are f-ed up^~). However, didn't it win some kind-of award? That went over the line, and I don't blame Canadians for getting pissed-off. Some things are funny, but there's a line, you know? |
Anyone who doesn't realize that song is making more fun of America and the lack of parental accountabilty than it is of Canada either has some serious sensitivity issues or an absent sense of humor.
The "award" you're talking about was an Oscar nomination for best song from a motion picture. The song was creative, well written, and it deserved the Oscar nod. Unfortunately, that tw@t Phil Collins won for his Tarzan fluff song. |

I thought the blame Canada song was funny. In fact, I thought the whole movie was funny. I pretty much like all the movies where they make fun of Canadians. |

Sometimes I'm not so sure if the portrayal of Canadians on South Park is making fun of them, or the fact that some people think that there's a huge difference between the two countries when in fact they're so similar on a lot of levels.
The whole flapping heads/beady eyes, "Hey guy, relax buddy..." thing is so overdone, makes me wonder. |

I will have you know that I am not considerably older. I just happen to have had a very successful career and am interested in making a further contribution. I believe that teaching would be second nature to me, having taught adults for many years in a business environment. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a merlot on the kitchen counter. |
Have you ever lived in New England? Just Curious, Sir.

I get the impression for that article that she expected to be treated like some sort of goddess when moving to Canada. As if Canadians were supposed to say "Oh, you're an American, eh? Golly Wow! Can we have an autograph and kiss your feet? a-boot Well sorry she didn't get that treatment. But I'm guessing the author is a nasty piece of work who angers people wherever she goes. If she can't make friends with Canadians, she can't make friends with anyone. $10 Canadian ($9.25US) says she is the type who always brings up American superiority and how things are SOOO much better in the good ol' U.S of A. |
I don't get that impression at all. Would you care to quote some specific sentenses from her article that support your sugestion? |

I didn't see the movie, so I guess I was reading the lyrics a bit out of context, if you will. I didn't take much time to ponder the lyrics, either Just curious as to why some people might find it offensive. Damn, you have a good memory, SS. I didn't even know there was a Tarzan movie!
As for Bud being a best selling beer in Canada, I wonder if it has anything to do with price. Maybe that's why a waiter in Montreal once looked at me funnily when I asked him to give me whatever the most popular beer was in Canada. He brought me a Labatt's.

I think often times it is the same for Canadians who go to the US. I lived in Dallas TX for a few months and was mocked beyond belief for being from Canada. I think both Americans and Canadians generalize and stereotype. Believe it or not the impression I got from the many Americans I met was that the Canadians live like a bunch of hillbillies who, unless you live in one of our major cities, you do not have access to electricity, running water, or food that you don't shoot yourself. On many occassions I was asked by American who were dead serious whether I lived in an igloo. Another popular question was "Do y'all got computers up there in Canada?". Yet, Nora Jacobson states we don't know much about or nieghbours to the South. This clearly show how little Americans know about our nation as well. It is a two way street.
As for Canadians constanly saying that we beat the US in the gold medal game in thier own country, IT"S TRUE. We have a right to proud of that. We say the same thing when we beat Russia and Sweden in their own countries. The US woud say the same thing! Its Hockey! It's called home game advantage. When you beat a team who has this you have played the game quite well and your country should be proud of you.
Sticking with hockey for a moment, I can't remember the Canadians ever booing at the good ol' hockey game when thee American Anthem was sang aloud. However, I clearly remember when the Americans booed my countries anthem at the San Jose-Edmonton game a few weeks ago. This is by far one of the most disrespectful things I have seen. And as many of you hockey fans will know, we had every opportunity to "boo" them back in Edmonton, but instead we cheered for the American anthem. Although this doesn't speak for all Americans, it really doesn't say much about their perception of my country. However, I am smart enough to know that this is not the opinion of all Americans, just as anti-americanism isn't the way for all Canadians. But when you receive this sort of behavior , and silly question from Americans in regard to one of the worlds largest countries, it is EASY to see why there is such hostility towards the United States.
Americans have no respect for my country, which this post and it's replys have made me realize. With statements like "After meeting them, you will no longer wonder why Quebec wants to succeed from this nation of obstreperous douchebags" from paper tiger, it is easy to see where the hatred comes from.
And I really don't want to sound rude, but if someone is so unhappy in Canada...then leave! Your post has only added to the anti-americanism that many Canadians feel toward you. You have clearly proven the point of the disrespect some Americans seem to have towards my country by posting a message telling people not to move to Canada. Gee...I wonder why some Canadians don't like Americans!!I am very angered that someone, from any country and not just the U.S would move to Canada, hate it, dis it for everyone to see, yet stay!! |

It doesn't happen often, but when someone meets me and wants to run down New Zealand or point out how thier country is better, I don't argue, I just say "Listen, I'm a person, not a New Zealander, sorry, not interested". |

Well said Robyn!
I would say that about 90% of the negative comments made about Canada are made by immature dumbasses who are looking to stir crap up. They toss out insults and disparage a wonderful country. The people who do this truly are the lowest of the low.
These same people also dont brook any commentary about their country either....even if it is true! When people list facts they attact with their ignorance and preconcieved notions.
Canadian: "I think George Bush is a dumbass" (this is an opinion stated by an individual and has no bearing on the rest of Americans)
American retort: ")(*&(^O!!! (&(*&%*(&!! _)*&*_!!!" Very similar to monkeys throwing crap......perhaps hoping that you too will descend to their level and a good time will be had by all I mean who doesnt love flinging crap? And the one who flings the most crap at the other wins.....and is elected president |

Someone asked if I ever lived in socially respondible New England. HA! Do I sound like a flaming Democrat hell-bent on providing equal rights to the "hairdressers" of the world? Here's a pic of where I was last night, at the Big and Rich Concert in Roanoke Rapids, NC, with 20,000 other rednecks, and let me tell you, we're hell-bent on taking this world back. Coming at you, and soon.
