They're excellent. Been spending some time on a friend's iMac and am impressed enough that I'll be making the switch from Wins within the year, hopefully. Actually now you can run Wins on a Mac, if you wish.
The Mac OSX and other software is that good, and the hardware's come a long way from just a few years ago.
G5s, which used IBM chips, aren't being sold anymore but new iMacs and MacBooks/Pros (notebooks) use Intel's Dual Core chip. These new machines run even faster except for when running some programs which are not yet Intel-native such as Adobe in-Design. New versions of these programs are in the works. The Mac OS itself and stuff like MS Word (Mac Version) run very fast. Most all the games I tried ran fine, too. |

I'm not going to get into the whole Mac vs. PC debate--I have one of both righ now and use them for different things.
I think anyone will admit that the fact that Mac can now run Windows gives it something of an empirical edge in the two, though I'm not exactly sure how it run (is it a dual-boot setup where you can use either system, or just the one?).
I hope I can distill the essence of the debate (aside from the "You guys suck!" ethos). If you're interested in playing games, go with the PC. If you're more into media (and, especially, doing it yourself), go with the Mac. There's also the fact that you're going to pay more for the Mac and the software.
Personally, I use my desktop for games and work at home (I can't stand not being able to hit the Alt key, particularly in word processing and spreadsheets) as well as downloading TV and the like. I use the Mac laptop for work on the go (and video in class) as well as actually watching a lot of the videos that I DL on the desktop (the display is beautiful). My only regret is that I couldn't wait a few months until they started offering the laptop with the Intel chip--that would have been the best of both worlds. |

Why bother with the G5 iMac, when they have the replacement Intel Core Duo iMacs out now? They're faster, will run both OS X and XP, but cost the same.
The G5's are essentially obsolete (he says with palpable irony, as he laments his own poor-yet-beloved G4 Powerbook...).
If you're buying a Mac this year, make sure to get Intel.

Being able to run Windows now makes having the two seperate systems obsolete. You can't run both simultaneously, you have to boot it at start-up, but weighed against the convience of having both at hand, it's really nothing to get upset about.

To the OP. First off, welcome to the club and good luck with your purchase. Macs are awesome
Now, if you're using this instead of a tv, you may need to buy some extra hardware. It won't just automatically pick up tv shows via cable or whatever. It can be done, but again, you just may need some kind of extra device. Front Row is a great feature that lets you switch back and forth from DVD's back to iTunes and all that. And since if comes with a remote, it's even better.
For more on that: http://www.apple.com/imac/frontrow.html
Now, as far as a cost breakdown, yes off the shelf macs are more expensive, but when you look at the hardware that macs have preinstalled (they finally started shipping with 512 of RAM) and also that you've easily got a thousand dollars worth of software preinstalled, it's really a pretty good deal.
And yeah, just make sure you don't accidently take home the G5. I really don't think that could happen, but just ask "Does this have the Intel chip?" and you'll be fine. Also, make sure to ask about tv capabilities. I could be wrong about that. I'd hate to have you take it home and try to watch CSI only to be pissed off that it's not able to do it out of the box. Everything else should be gravy. I've been using a Mac for years and couldn't be happier.
And just for some funny insights into the new world of Macs and PC's, check out their new commercials: http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/
The iLife one and the Virus one are probably my favorites. Can't help but laugh. And the Network ad is also very funny.
