| Not sure how many of you were watching the Korea / Ghana match on SBS, but I'm sure most of you are familiar with the ever so zealous Red Devils. Hats off to this supporting squad that travels in unison to support the Korean soccer team. But here is the underdog 3rd world African side with their moment in the spotlight, singing their national anthem, and one can't even hear the melody as the Korean chearleading squad are banging on their brass teukjongs, roaring "dae-han-min-guk". Honestly, the Ghana squad stop mouthing even, as the clanging and daehanminguk roaring engulfed the stadium and swallowed the Ghana national anthem being played out over the speakers. No respect? Not an ounce of respect!!! Pi$$ed off, I am. That really did tick me off. A taste of things to come for the season of nauseatingly red patriotism is upon us. Yipee. End of rant. |

I noticed that. It's a very strange atmosphere inside the Hibs ground. Almost the whole crowd is Korean. All the ads banners are Korean. And as soon as the Korean anthem came on, it got piped up very loud across the telly. The Ghana anthem was so quiet you could barely hear it.
And one last thing ... it would be nice to have the starting eleven of the opposing side at least mentioned once. Seven times the starting eleven for Korea is put up; Ghana NOT ONCE. |

I saw a fan wearing a t-shirt that said 'go back to Africa'. At the time I didn't connect it with the soccer match (this was early at Kwangamun, before nightfall when the soccer watching starts on the big, tower screens) and thought it might be something pleasant, the intent, like 'go back to your roots, we are all Africans, DNA testing prooves this' and 'the ancestors of all men are Africans'.
But it probably means 'go...back...to...africa'. 
Sports like this, championships (ritual, sham warfare), remind me of the mad nationalism that occurs when countries are at war. The instinctual bonding of one group in its nationalism. And the open aversion/hostility to other nations, and races.
When else do you say 'go back to Africa' and mean it. Peace. |

| Was it just my TV or does "be the REDS" not apply anymore? Their uniforms looked quite orange to me. |

The shirts look pink on KBS.
Ghana looked really good, found some gaping holes in the Korea defence and blasted a few good chances over the bar in addition to the three goals they scored. |

unlike all north americans 
that aside, i'm sure sbs did their usual sterling job, providing unbiased and fair coverage of the game.... errr.....
i hope korea makes it through, but i have a horrible feeling that they will struggle to get anything from the swiss or the togo (-ans? ists? bogans?). still, an early exit will save you from moaning about nationalistic tv coverage and 'football as war' blah blah blah
go on, wear your 'be the reds' t-shirt with pride! |

It's Togolese.
If Korea is eliminated early, my money is on them not showing any other World Cup 2006 matches and just replaying 2002 while the present tourney goes on. |

Never thought of that? Are we doomed to miss most of the World Cup? Will I again have to unplug my TV? |

Noticed that too. I remember England fans (rightly) coming in for some stick a few years back for booing and wolf whistling through the anthems of teams like Italy and Argentina. Thank god it stopped. I wonder if that level of disrespect was shown to the Korean national dirge what the consequences would be? Like another poster above, I was severely pi$$ed at having to go to the ESPN website to find out who would run on for Ghana and what their formation would be. I suggest in future that Dae Han Min Guk run out against an invisible XI and just kick the Chuku ball around for the thrill of their fans. Like a lot of people last night, they lost me as a sympathetic ally after this and the Bosnian anthem debarcle. I hope the tw@ts get 7 put past them in every group match and come home to be pelted with radish. |

I think you have the answer there. The TV stations turned up the volume on the Korean national anthem, but turned it down on the Ghanaian so that we could hear all the "Deahanminkuks!" and the drums. If you haven't already noticed, there are pre-game shows featuring tone deaf pop singers. Apparently, the crowd at those shows doesn't seem to think it's ironic that English (bad English, but English nonetheless) is prevalent in their 'nationalistic songs'.
