Everybody's applauding Steve Jobs and Apple for coming out with the iPod like they invented penicillin. and they sure made a lot of cash. but did anyone notice that iPod's are shoddy pieces of sh*t?

maybe it's just my iPod and my friends' iPods. but mine never worked quite right and it just died last week. all that music that I bought (cough) erased forever.

and that's just a defective iPod. even if it doesn't break you still have to deal with the 2 year battery problem and iTunes, which some of the slowest, stupidest, software I've used in a while.

I mean, take some pride Apple! you guys were supposed to be the cool rebels who made the good products. and now for the first time everybody is using an Apple product and it's a total f*cking piece. I like the interface and all, that's cleverly made. but the chinese people who put the stuff together must be drunk, because it don't work right.

ours had a problem too. We took it to the apple shop. They installed a file. Everything came back with a few hiccups. Now the ipod is back to reguler.

1) 2 year BATTERY??? What? My buddy had a first gen. ipod and has had the same one since it came out with absolutely NO problem. All of my friends with ipods (now hovering around 10) have had very few problems.

The ONE odd thing: It seemed that when the ipod was unused for a couple weeks, it started acting up a lot. That was odd; but it went away in a couple weeks.

Never owned an ipod, but what exactly is your beef with iTunes? I find it an excellent and highly configurable media player. Really good for organising play lists under a number of catagories.

iTunes is great. The iPod, the juries still out, as my first one just died after trying an update on it. I wanted to buy a Sony as a replacement, but I couldn't find one in the whole of Seoul, so I decided to try an iPod again, mainly for the ease of iTunes. We'll see.

I had some problems with my Ipod and the customer service, minor things, and after talking to others who'd had bad experiences I decided to sell it before the problems got worse - this was last summer. If you look on customer comment boards like Amazons, probelms seem to be common. I even bought and used mine in China, and still couldn't get any decent customer service, and the earbuds were garbabe, I suspect they were counterfeit. The customer service people were rude the few times they actually responded.

The next closest thing, the IRiver, seems to also have problems. My mom has one and hers will turn itself on, thus running down its battery. Sometimes it won't turn off. She has had it less than one year now.

I am afraid to buy another mp3 player, though I really want one. Dropping 200 - 300 US$ for something that might be busted after one year... I see that Samsung has a phone now that has mp3 capabilities and a nice screen, I might just get that. To be honest, Apple seems arrogant and despite their untouchable cute rep and high hipster factor, I don't think I could bring myself to buy another Ipod.

Why is the portable mp3 player market so anemic? You would think there'd be a lot more companies offering goodies. And does anyone have one of the new phones that has mp3 ability? The samsung I am looking at has 70 GB of storage and gets cool reviews, but I think its first generation and I have never owned a Samsung product before.

The company is not a cult the damn users are a cult. Have you ever talked with a Mac/Ipod owner? It's like talking to a rabid evangelist on speed. All they can talk about is how good the mac/ipod is and will keep hammering at you until you agree to buy one. I slam the door on them faster than I do on freakin JWs.

They're notorious for breaking in some way. A friend back home has had to take an Ipod back to the shop to be fixed/exchanged twice!

I'm happy with my little mp3 player personally. That has one or two flaws, but overall it's great.

Before I start this reply I should point out that I am one of those prementioned born-again Mac evangelists, however when it comes to ipods that's where I draw the line. I would much rather, and with a much clearer conscience, recommend Scientology (or any of those other equally crazy superstitions masquerading as religions, i.e. all of them) to a friend than an ipod.

Now itunes is a great program, its just a shame about the ipods themselves...being riddled with problems and short life-spans.

I'd hate to say anything vaguely pro-Korean on this web-site, as...well that's not really what this forum is about, but a couple of years ago i bought a 40 GB iriver (Korean brand), which is still going strong (and has outlived many a friends ipod). Going against my mac evangelist beliefs, I'd have to say at the time it was far superior to the ipod. I concede the ipods were better in some respects, however mostly superficial (i.e. a little smaller, look cooler, and have that fancy wheel thing).

I dont know if iriver has made any new models since then, or if apple have fixed the problems in the new generation ipods (which I doubt...but if they have, disregard the majority of this anti-ipod speel).

Considering that an ipod is limited in what it can be stuffed with mp3-wise and which computer you can use to upload stuff and that with the breakages and whatnot it doesn't seem any more (actually seems less) reliable than the other machines but yet applers still tout its greatness.

Just a matter of time before you start preaching the virtues of a mac vs the evils of a pc and completely ignore that not too many people have problems with a pc and software for a mac is hard to come by.

You might not be cultish, but a whole fucking lot of applers are.

Quick thing I'll point out about that is that usually people do not get online to rave about how great something is. There's always going to be a deceptively large number of complaints about any given product when you research stuff online.

Now, that being said, I used to have an iPod and it totally crashed on me right when I got to Korea (which was after just about a month or two of usage). I was really crushed, because I was in a small town, didn't know anyone, didn't have a computer, and only my music was keeping me alive. God, that sucked.

Got it replaced, way on down the line, and ended up losing it forthwit. Kinda afraid to buy another, because it does seem so fragile.

I have always used Macs and I love 'em dearly (even if I don't always appreciate the ad campaigns. Gandhi for chrissake?) but I'll admit that the iPod I bought two years ago acted up regularly, like freezing up and also having power problems. I brought it in the first time, and they gave me a brand new one. That one started acting weird too, so I brought it in, and they replaced it again. I'm not using it these days, but I can't remember whether it's because it broke a third time or I just can't be bothered.

That was a few generations ago, so I am hoping they've worked out some of the kinks with the Shuffle, the Nano, the video one, etc.

Still... Up With Macs!
