I tried the seldon used "search" function, but no dice, so I ask all of you:
How do you best ship your goods from Korea back home (US, in my case)?
I had friends back in Daegu who hired a shipping company that packed your things for you and shipped by volume (not weight), door to door overseas, for 500,000 KRW. The got an even better deal by shipping from door to port, as they lived in San Diego. I am able to ship from door (in Pusan) to the Port of Houston.
Any experience with this? My Korean friend turned up a company that will do it for 1.5 mil. No thanks. |

Nothing helpful to add, but I've got 12 packed boxes that are waiting a trip to the post office. Am wondering also if there is a better and possibly cheaper way..... |

Your problem is Houston is a different ocean and a MUCH longer trip by boat. Alternatively you can look at shipping to a west coast port and then using ground services in the states from there to Texas. |

The service those from San Diego used was a door to door service to anywhere in N America, which even included remote mountain towns in B.C. If only I could find the name of that company now. |

The post office is OK. I sent 6 boxes home, but 5 of them had holes in them when I received them in the US. One of my boxes was put into another box my the mail service, because somewhere between Korea and the states, some moron left my box in the rain. The box was all wet when I looked inside, but nothing fell out. Many folks have no respect for others' things. |

I sent 19 or 21 (I forget now) 20KG boxes through the mail- I received every single one of them undamaged and on time or even in some case ahead of ETA. The secret was to pack them well (don't put your dictionaries in the same box as your xmas tree ornaments, for example), and use LOTS (and lots) of packing tape to maintain the integrity of the box through the journey. |

I got a shipping quote of 800,000won which includes packing here, and pick up in Chicago. But then I would have to pay for a truck to move the items from Chicago, plus there's a handling fee so everything would be about 1,000,000won-my estimate for the total. I decided it would be better to spend about 400,000won shipping through the Post Office. |

I used Allied Pickfords-sorry, I don't have their info anymore, search Google. They gave me an estimate based on my description, came to my apt. and carted my boxes away. They will pack stuff for you if you want. Arrived at my US address in about 6 weeks. Seemed chaotic because my Korean is not good and the guy's English wasn't good, but the forms were in English and I just did what he told me to do and everything worked out fine. I paid about 700,000 for 1.5 cubic meters. |

The best way to pack stuff into a box is to get the guy at the post office to do it; that costs about 5000 won or so but then you're sure that it's been done well. Not sure if all post offices have someone like that but in COEX they do. |
