So I've set up a dual-boot on my desktop with Win 64, and although I only use it for a couple of games, I'm still a little concerned about the virus protection situation on it.

I let it expire on my XP installation and then went for Avast protection--in part because it's free and I won't be using the machine too long, and in part because I'm paranoid about plugging my credit card number into the computer when the virus protection is gone (quite the vicious cycle, I know). The fact that Symantec was a total pain about extending the existing copy didn't help either.

Anyway, I installed Avast on 64 and it doesn't seem to be working--I get some error message from it about how it can't get updates or the like. I'm concerned, of course, that I could somehow get a virus on the 64 and have it spread. At the same time, I'm only here another couple of months and my school is going to get the machine when I go home (I'm sure they'll clean it and install Korean Windows). Any suggestions for what to do?

I went through this a few months ago and discovered at the time that AVAST is the only AV company offering a free A/V version of its software compatible with Win64.
I don't know if this has changed in the past six months or not (I expect it probably has) but I'd put my trust in AVAST since they were the only ones on the ball for this.
