Billionaire Kenneth Thomson, Canada's richest man, dead at 82
Mon Jun 12, 04:03 PM EST

By Gary Norris

TORONTO (CP) - Kenneth Thomson, a bashful billionaire who as Canada's richest person guided his inherited fortune out of the newspaper business to thrive in an era of electronic information, is dead at age 82.

Thomson wore inexpensive suits and his shoes tended to be down at heels, as he seemed determined to play down his wealth and stay out of the public eye. With a reputation for severe frugality, he rarely entertained at his Toronto mansion. "He was certainly shy," said Vic Parsons, author of Ken Thomson: Canada's Enigmatic Billionaire.
