I mentioned to my students that there used to be a long running TV comedy drama series about the Korean war, and they were very surprised. I tried to describe it to them, but had to scratch my brain, because it was so long ago.

Are any of the series available on DVD? Might make for an interesting class or two amongst adults and university students.

It has (or at least used to have) a bad reputation here. When I mentioned it back in '94, people turned their noses up because it 'showed Korea in a bad light'. None of the people I spoke to had actually seen it. That was just the rep the program had.

It didn't seem so inaccurate at times...tell them about "Rosies Bar".

Anytime I hear/see a helicopter flying around, I find myself humming the theme song.

A great series, great. One of the few pieces of information I had about Korea before coming here.

Although set in Korea, I think it's actually about Vietnam.

I remember hearing someone point out once the Koreans in M*A*S*H all wear those Vietnamese hats.

It may have a bad reputation, and Koreans who consider themselves well-versed in western culture may not have a clue what it is, but I found a copy of the movie in my local video store.

MASH, both movie and TV series, were protesting the war in Vietnam but used the Korean war as a stand in because it was more politically acceptable at the time.

speaking of, where's the poster MASH4077 these days?

3 Season (4 or 10) DVDs were just released last week onto my FTP service... its little before my time but I've seen a few repeats and it's cool. Generally, if it's a successful TV series then a DVD is available

It really didn't talk about the Korea much, except to show the people living off of the bases. To me, the most accurate parts were the hills surrounding the area and the times they talked about the cold weather.
